What is YOUR Comfort Food?
You know how it is. You’re not yourself. Your throat hurts or your tummy hurts and Mom fixes something something you love, and it happens so often throughout your childhood that when you get to be an adult, and you find yourself sick, it’s the food you think of.
And, of course, it depends on the illness. For tummy things, I remember chicken broth and jello. But for colds and flu, it was always tomato soup and grilled cheese sandwiches. Now, even if I just had a bad day, grilled cheese sandwich and tomato soup can still cheer me up.
For my husband, raised in another part of the country, it is vegetable soup and cornbread. After we married, I learned to make cornbread in an iron skillet, and it is pretty good. He breaks it up and puts it in a glass of milk, though, and I can’t even watch him eat it.
Our son grew up in Tunis – when he has a sore throat, nothing will do but mint tea.
So what is YOUR comfort food? What did your Mamma (or Papa) make you when you were sick as a child? What do you dream of even now, all grown up, but sick and miserable?

A hearty beef stew with some crusty bread. Especially on a nice little grey, chilly day like today.
I don’t have anything.
How sad.
piping hot English breakfast tea with milk and sugar, with a glass of ice cold water on the side. miraculously, it cures all ills: cold, flu, stress, anxiety, jet lag. I’m having a cup right now, and toasting you as I do!
Well in case of tummy aches, its mash5ool(oiless) o roba.
but when there’s nothing in the fridge and I’m not too anxious to get out of the house, its toast o jibn Kraft.
tee hee. familiar_stranger’s comment reminded me of the comment I should have posted. when I was a little girl, my favorite food was macaroni and cheese. my very dear aunt, recently returned from Jordan, came to visit us. she heard my favorite dish and decided to make it for me – a special, gourmet version involving good pasta and carefully melted, blended, and thickened cheese sauce.
As the story goes, I took one look at this exquisite dish and said: ick. what _is_ this?
little three year old rube. to me, “real” macaroni and cheese was orange, and came from a box.
haha that’s funny adiamondinsunlight (ADISL from now on).
Hey I’d appreciate any art contributions to my latest post. just link me your favorite works of art 🙂
Here
Amer – hearty beef stew! Yummmy!
Delicate -no favorite comfort food? Nothing that can make you feel better, loved, taken care of? Even plain rice with a little butter?
Little Diamond – I remember the macaroni and cheese and the look on those three little faces who had been waiting all day for “real” macaroni and cheese! I still laugh thinking about it!
Familiar – I sent a Fragonard . . . interesting selections, interesting commentary. When you think of mash5ool, is it with any meat?
My husband, who is Tunisian, insists that the cure for anything is to drink a small glass which contains olive oil and fresh lemon juice in equal measure. It’s not exactly comfort food but it does seem to work ;o)
Mrs.Schaaieb – does it work for you, or just for him?? I don’t think it would work for me, but mint tea does! Welcome here, dear, glad to have your input.
M y tummy keeps on hurting evrey time i have sweets.
