Intlxpatr Turns Twenty Years!
Welcome to our virtual celebration, old friends and new.
Twenty years ago on this very day, newly arrived in Kuwait, I joined a very lively, edgy and welcoming blogging scene. It was frightening to me, but I had my reasons. There were bloggers I loved reading – I started by commenting on their posts. It was like a salon, topics and views and opinions everywhere, and also some facts.
There is an old story about Martin Luther, the priest who nailed his ideas for a better church on the door, and while the church didn’t change, the community in which he lived was willing to entertain his thoughts, and slowly, things DID change. When asked why he would take the risk – being called heritical could end to death – he said (in German), “I cannot other.”
Stepping into the blogworld was stepping outside a comfort zone and expressing thoughts some might think better left unspoken.
C’mon in. Here There and Everywhere has always worked to be a safe place for exploring new ideas, disruptive thoughts and how to make things better. We’ve got great virtual refreshments and a safe place to vent 😊.

I miss our great discussions, and I miss the liveliness of the old blogging scene. I’m not so comfortable with the arguments and name-calling I find in other outlets, nor the need to be wary of those who are monitoring – and who are they, anyway?
Meanwhile, a good friend mentioned recently how political I have gone.
Honestly, in these times, even the apolitical are speaking out. I heard a priest today talk about his anger at the hijacking of the gospel, used for vengence and not for love. I found it very brave, those strong words. If we don’t speak out bravely now, the crushing forces seeking vengence and control create a world most of us won’t want to live in.
I want a government who subsidizes health care for ALL. I want science to recommend vaccines which improve our quality of life and save lives. I want corporations that have standards to meet for air and water and environmental protection. I want our police to protect the weak against the bullying and violence of those who think might makes right. I want to welcome the stranger, creating new textures and patterns in the fabric of our nation. I want every person’s vote to count. I want responsible, accountable, educated leadership, and congressional decisions created by working together to achieve doable compromises.

Stunning Cruelty
We’ve already seen the results of putting poorly disciplined, poorly self-restrained, poorly trained, poorly vetted young men in a pseudo-police position to work with immigration. Homeland Security used to be filled with normal bureaucratic professionals, people with a mission to control immigration who had the skills and maturity to do their jobs without resorting to violence when faced with a challenging situation. We call that professionalism.
You put excitable, poorly trained young men in a position of control, and it brings out their worst instincts. It becomes a We vs. Them situation. There is no insight, no compassion, no priority on de-escalation.
So what could possibly go wrong if you issue this volatile work force the new stun gloves to deal with their mission? These gloves inflict pain, and can be very dangerous to children, the elderly, pregnant women and other vulnerable populations. Do we trust these excitable agents will have the presence of mind to remove their gloves when faced with children, the elderly, pregnant women, etc.?

The Defense and Push for Deployment

Criticism and Backlash
The plan has drawn immediate outrage from civil rights groups, including the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and the National Immigration Law Center. [1]
- Lack of Accountability: Critics point out that because the shock can be delivered imperceptibly with a simple touch, the tool is highly vulnerable to undocumented abuse and hidden use of force. [1]
- Safety Concerns: Though marketed as non-lethal, 404 Media uncovered a manufacturer’s user manual noting that the gloves could potentially contribute to “sudden death” under certain conditions. The guidelines explicitly warn against using the device on high-risk populations, including pregnant women, children, the elderly, or disabled individuals. [1, 2]
This is a weapon created to deal with a situation CREATED by this administration. We are a nation of immigrants. You don’t need shock gloves to deal with us.
Mr. Homan, give your agents professional training. Teach them self-control, help them not to panic when they face demonstrators. Give them de-escalation techniques. Help your ICE agents deal compassionately with the population, and give them tools for self-restraint and crowd control. Stun gloves and guns are overkill, cruel, and often fatal. Do you want your agents to deal with the lifelong regrets of their impulsive behaviors?

At least 40 of those pardoned rioters have already been rearrested, charged, or sentenced for new crimes since walking free. Shocking absolutely nobody.

It is the actual, documented record, sitting in plain sight for anyone willing to look.
So the next time someone tells you to relax and give him a chance, ask them how many more indictments, judgments, and shutdown records he needs to rack up before that chance runs out.

Because I follow – or try to follow – piracy in Somalia, I go down rabbit holes. Some rabbit holes lead you to the most amazing places, including a comprehensive update on an upsurge in Somalian piracy and root causes.
The rabbit holes led me to this fascinating group, Crisisgroup.org. I’m always curious who is behind these organizations – this organization, out of Brussels, seems to keep watch on some far-flung and, to U.S. readers, sometimes obscure potential events, which, when they explode, we wonder why we never heard of these fomenting conflicts.
When Lies Control the Narrative . . .

Today, National Pulic Radio reports the following:
The Trump administration has mass-deleted information regarding prosecutions related to the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol, including cases involving defendants who assaulted police officers. This move marks the latest attempt by Trump to alter the narrative surrounding the violent riot. Last week, Justice Department news releases that detailed guilty pleas, jury verdicts and prison sentences disappeared from government websites. An NPR review found that the deletions included information about some of the most serious assaults on law enforcement that happened that day.
We all watched the attack on the Capitol happen in real time, with our own eyes, and much of it filmed by the insurrectionists who had been told the election was stolen. Mike Pence didn’t believe it and did not do as he was instructed to do. He supported the truth of the 2020 election of Joe Biden,
And now, we have a Trumpian edict of “non-disclosure” for all Federal Employees.
We used to take pride in the transparency of our government – not even that long ago! Less than one presidential administration ago! What happened to oversight (DOGE’D out of existence) and whistleblowers calling out corruption?
Calling out corrution is inconvenient for this regime. Bringing corruption into full view should make the corrupt squirm, but this administration has no scruples, no embarrassment.
And now, we have a new corrupt senatorial candidate out of Texas, Ken Paxton. Paxton has been charged with scandal and corruption by his own fellow Republicans, and is a welcome addition to the shameless corruption of the Trump Administration, bellying up to the trough, feeding off the taxpayers.
Did you know that “Tromper” in French is to fool? Si je ne me trompe pas.
Coming Home to Roost
There’s an old joke about Grand Juries being so suggestible that they will indict a ham sandwich in a paper bag.
Rarely does a Grand Jury presentation fail. Rarely, that is, when experienced prosecutors look at the evidence and decide a case is worthy of taking to trial, that the evidence supports the charges.
With changes to the Trump Department of Justice, however, grand jury cases are failing. Rules of presentation of evidence are broken. Private conversations with jurists take place. Claims are made which cannot be supported. Two things happen – some of the grand juries fail to bring back an indictment, and those that go forward are whacked in court, to the great embarrassment of those trying to follow Trumps instructions.

Politicized Weaponized Justice and Unintended Consequences
I laughed when I read about the end of the Trump IRS case. He was going to lose, so he pulled an appearant agreement with the Department of Justice, where attorneys are fleeing the use of the Department to go after Trump’s enemies. Trump doesn’t care that the evidence does not support a winning case. He wants his “enemies” charged, like he was. He was found guilty, by a jury of his peers.
A very smart attorney, someone say like James Comey, will be able to find a way to use this case, and the funds set aside, to charge the current Department of Injustice with discrimination, that these funds should be widely available to those who believe the Justice Department has gone after them for purposes of vengeance, rather that breaking the law. This gang of dunces have opened a loop of opportunity, just one more tragic comedy in a regime of careless, callous, destructive actions.
