You Can’t Make This Stuff Up

Today’s Grin for today, from, no kidding, The Kuwait Times, page 6:

Brothels’ raids continue
Raids launched against brothels and suspected love dens continued unabated all over Kuwait. A security force yesterday raided two apartments in Jleeb Al-Shuyoukh where 34 Asians were caught red-handed in the most uncompromising positions . . . .

  2. Delicate! Holy Smokes! That never for a heartbeat occurred to me!

No, what I was thinking was they rushed to the scene and saw 34 Asians sitting around the room with their arms crossed and a stern look on their faces – UNcompromising position (as opposed to a “compromising position” which MOST newspapers use to imply a sexual liaison) 🙂

  4. red handed, because they were uncompromisingly finger-printing one another, pre-emptively demonstrating their rectitude in case of any raids from the morality police.

jebel al-shuyukh literally means the old men’s mountain. (of course, shuyukh is also used for ‘elders’ – or for the upper house of parliaments, as with majlis al-shuyukh for the US Senate.) all I could think of when reading the story and its location was: oh, those dirty old men, blaming their escapades on a dormitory of innocent laborers.

  5. Skunk – he he he I didn’t even see the “red handed”. The KT uses red-handed in the crime column at least once every day, either before or after “the police rushed to the scene”. It’s one reason I write these things down; after a while you stop seeing the things you see. Thanks for bringing it (back) to my attention! And, he he he, also glad I beat you on the “uncompromising” positions. That one just had me laughing out loud.

Little Diamond – I woulda had no idea. How interesting – the Jleeb al-shauikh is a particularly sad part of town, losing water and electricity frequently, and with people living 10 – 30 in a room. Sort of a bachelor city. Thousands of men, and a few “women for rent.”

  7. I have said it time and time again: the crime sections of the Kuwait Times and Arab Times provide me countless moments of mirth…and not because of the crimes committed but simply the way it is reported!

  8. Lady J – did you ever figure out how the grocery clerks fit in the shelves where they were found “compromising?” :-0
