Amer Al-Hilal Steps Up to the Plate

He eyes the pitcher. He swings the bat! He connects! He hits the ball out of the park!

OK, OK, sometimes I carry an analogy too far. But seeing our fellow blogger Hilaliya: A Kuwait State of Mind on the front page of today’s Arab Times, taking a swat at the recent ban on internet phone services made me feel like dancing.

He encourages all of us to raise the cry against this ban, a ban which is unenforceable (think of all the IT people running around Kuwait who know just how to get around this blockage) and counter to the best interests of the state of Kuwait. As Amer says – Kuwait needs a Minister of Communications who looks toward the FUTURE, and makes policy decisions for the long term good of the state and community, not one who barely comprehends the new technologies and is unwilling to go with the times.

You can’t hold back technology. The genie is out of the bottle. So how can you use the new technologies to better serve the needs of the wealthy state and its inhabitants?

  1. Thank you Expat for linking the article.

I am an expat living in Kuwait and was very impressed with Mr. Hilals article. I did indeed see the article this morning and it has been the talk of my office.

I dont lose hope for this country when young Kuwaiti intellectuals when people like Mr. Hilal “step up to the plate” as you mentioned.

I am afraid though his peers might not be as passionate at his topic (expats and net phone services) as is required.

PS – I love your Blog, Xpat.

  2. Trini – thank you for loving my blog! 🙂

I see SO MANY good Kuwaitis, eager to get the country on a new, modern path. They are smart, and capable, and professional. There are so many exciting things happening in this region, I want Kuwait to be a part of it, too.

  4. Hi,

I like your car stories a lot. I am a writer/cartoonist and am making a comic book about Kuwait, where I lived for three years and taught there. Would it be OK to illustrate some of your car stories? Of course I would give you credit. I don’t know if they will ever be published but that is my intention.
    Thanks,
    sandz
