    or to get even more cynical:

    kuwait for kuwaitis, – hathar kuwaitis

    “hathar” means “civilised” ie not the persian kuwaitis and not the bedouin kuwaitis. according to a kuwaiti friend, the society here is split along the 3 lines of hathar, persian and bedouin.

17. Persian Kuwaitis are identified as hathar. Hathar means a Kuwaiti of any ethnic background who was settled/urban prior to 1946. Hathar include Afro-Kuwaitis and Kuwaitis of Balochi and Kurdish ancestry.

    Hathar = Kuwaitis who resided within the modern boundaries of Kuwait prior to 1946.

    Badu = Naturalized Kuwaitis, mostly immigrants from Saudi Arabia, who were naturalized in the 1970s and 1980s after Kuwait had become an independent, oil-exporting nation. Badu are of Bedouin descent but most were Saudi citizens prior to being invited to Kuwait and instantly naturalized for political/ethno-sectarian reasons.

    Kuwaiti society is split among many lines, the most common ones are Sunni/Shia and Hathar/Badu.

    There are many Kuwaitis of non-Arab ancestry apart from Persians. For example, there are Kuwaitis of Turkish, Kurdish, African and Balochi ancestry. They are all identified as Hathar. Hathar means any Kuwaiti, regardless of ancestry, who resided in Kuwait before the launch of the oil era (1946).
