I Will Never Understand You

When I came online this morning, I got a big shock. Yesterday, I had the highest reader count ever in the history of the blog. I can usually count on Saturdays being a very low day for readership, and Sundays are usually a little better, so I am totally at a loss as to why yesterday would have attracted so many readers.

I posted book reviews. You never read my book reviews! I do it for the few readers out there like me, addicted to really good books, really good authors, and then we talk about books BEHIND YOUR BACK! You never even see the really good book discussions, or us getting together and furtively exchanging our books!

The last time I had so many readers was back in December, when I posted Mom’s Fruit Cake and the Divinity Candy recipes. Overall, that Divinity Candy keeps going and going. Go figure! I had only been blogging 3 months at the time, and oh, what a thrill it was to see that spike for December, but it left me desolate as your attentions shifted elsewhere and I couldn’t figure out how to get you back.

But Go Figure is my constant refrain. You are a fickle audience. I can’t help but be intrigued. I will never know what you are thinking; maybe 1% of my daily visitors comment. The rest of you drop in and snorkel around a little, and then leave, a swirl trailing behind you but no tangible evidence of your visit, other than the little tick in the stats that show you were here.

All I can deduce is that the best bet for blogging is to be content to start small and build slowly. Don’t worry about statistics. (And don’t worry if you ARE worried about statistics, as you can tell from the content of this post, we all are aware of our statistics, that was a purely hypocritical word of advice on my part.)

Honestly, I have come to the conclusion that my very safest bet is to blog for myself, and that is what I do. I blog about what catches my eye, what strikes my funny bone, what grabs my intellect, what inflames my heart, and I blog about the trivialities of my daily life. I love your visits, and I love hearing your point of view, even if it doesn’t agree with my own. I ask only that you watch your language, as my Mother reads this blog, and that while you are passionate, you steer clear of hate language toward any race, gender or nationality. Bureaucracy is fair game.

I am happy you came by, sorry if I was sleeping!

  1. Well hun, yes mostly – all bloggers got this online space to talk about their personal lives and daily activities or sometimes, resort to it to be able to discuss certain topics like Religion or politics. So, Yes in the first place this blog is YOU & for YOU and whether you have readers or not , it shouldn’t matter right πŸ™‚

“The rest of you drop in and snorkel around a little, and then leave, a swirl trailing behind you but no tangible evidence of your visit, other than the little tick in the stats that show you were here: !!! Well, at least some people drop by to say hi πŸ˜‰

  3. You can tell when I tick, cuz I come through my blog. I used to read a lot of people’s posts but I just find myself speechless sometimes, I don’t know what to write or I find my comment insignificant or redundant so I just twirl away, so maybe that’s what these people do too.

I can’t catch up with ur posts mashallah, sometimes I have time for the title and when I come back to comment you have another one posted!!

Keep it up though, I love visiting you πŸ™‚

  5. The readers of this blog shouldn’t need to watch their language because your Mother reads it, they should watch their language because YOU command respect. It’s crystal clear what kind of person you are. It just surprises me when people are so lacking in emotional intelligence that they cannot recognize which bloggers sink and which bloggers stay above a certain boundary when it comes to the conversations they have with their commenters.

We all think about our stats and I guess it’s because this is our own way of getting fame. First we didn’t have and then when our readership grows it seems we might have some and then we get addicted to it I suppose. That’s one hypothesis at least πŸ™‚

  6. You are right, Chikapappi. And I never say anything on the fashion blogs because I am a fashion nincompoop! But I snorkel around figuring I might learn something~

  8. Elijah, I always love your visits, and I totally love your vignettes, whether teaching stories (LLLLLOOOOOOOLLLLLLLL) or family stories or personal stories. You have a gift for making us part of your life.

  9. Hey, Blue Dress, nice to see you. There are some days I really struggle to find something to post about, and so I post something I consider almost drivel, and my readers love it. My most deeply felt posts sometimes attract attention later, or steadily, but I never know.

  10. One of the things I have always admired about you Zin, is the clarity with which you see things and your willingness to set firm boundaries. I think anyone who blogs is occasionally going to run into a trouble-maker, and I thank God they have been so rare, here. And people whom I have edited have come back, so I am thankful for that, too. I learn so much from those who comment.

And of course, you were the one who challenged me to make my first comment! Oh, the sweaty palms. I’ve learned so much from you! I was SO afraid. And I can’t imagine YOU afraid of anything. πŸ™‚

  13. Thanks so much habeebty. I am actually totally chicken. I am afraid of your cat for example πŸ˜€

I had a trouble maker too and I hope the jerk doesn’t read this blog so he doesn’t know how much he got under my skin because his offensive anonymous comments really really bugged me even though he didn’t know who I was. (He was making ethnicity related insults without knowing my ethnicity and he ended up insulting the wrong family roots but although he didn’t insult my own ethnic backdround it still bugged me that he was even trying to offend me.) It’s quite cowardly I think for a man to go after a girl like that.

Swair – we all have lives, right? And we all have our own interests . . . fickle is totally a matter of perspective πŸ˜‰ Me fickle, too! (My Mom is reading Women of Riyadh and says it is eye-popping!

1001 – Dying laughing – my trouble maker just said, and I quote “U all son off the beach.” *dying laughing*

  15. I am obsessed with my stats too! It is so interesting to see what people are interested in. The most posts I ever got in one day was when I did a post comparing dance to soccer and some big soccer website picked it up. The most constant traffic I get is when I make reference to current pop culture stuff, like the TV shows “So You Think You Can Dance” and “Dancing With the Stars”. While I like soccer and TV shows, those tend to be throwaway posts for me– things said in passing that I didn’t give a lot of preparation too. Funny how that works out!

  16. Maria, Hi sweetie! It’s really kind of like reading chicken entrails, isn’t it, trying to fathom what is going on with statistics? Sometimes I think it is local censors checking my blog when I look at the articles they scan. Sometimes – heavens, who knows what to think?

Soccer and Dance! I didn’t see that one! How cool! You really do have a unique point of view! Fresh!
