Fintas Observatory

You know me, I’m a newspaper addict. Maybe even a news addict. I read many of the articles to the very end; I read some of the filler articles. Life is a mystery to me, in some of the exotic countries I live in (No, not exotic to YOU, but exotic to a little Alaska girl who finds herself in the fairy-tale lands of Arabia!).

So here is the real question. Every now and then, I find a reference to the Fintas Observatory.

I’ve looked on maps – no Observatory.

I’ve GoogleEarthed Fintas – some parts are still pretty vague, but I see nothing that looks like an Observatory.

The Kuwait sky is often murky with haze – the clear nights we are currently having are a fabulous rarity – but maybe they were more common in the past?

Do you know where the Fintas Observatory is? Do they allow visitors, or is it invitational only?

  2. Only observatory I know of is in the Kuwait Science Club right off 6th ring road. And I’m an astronomy hobbyist.

  3. OK, I found one entry that leads to an Observatory in the Science Club, but I don’t know if that’s in Fintas. I had heard about it before.
    Here’s the main page:
    http://www.gulfrs.org/kwRecreation.htm

It’s under Science and Cultural arts:

    The Sciences
The sciences are actively encouraged. The Kuwait Fund for the Advancement of Science receives a compulsory donation from the annual profits of public companies which it uses to fund scientific research.
Membership of The Science Club on the 6th Ring Road is open to all nationalities. Managed by a group of enthusiastic amateurs, the Club’s amazing range of facilities and the latest in scientific hardware includes Al-Aujairy Observatory. Its aims are to create an informal environment in which people of all ages, from pre-teens to grandparents, can develop their scientific hobbies.

  4. That must be it – maybe because this is Kuwait, stuff beyond 6th ring is Fintas? Thanks for the good information!

  5. 6th Ring road is actually near the airport, nowhere close to Fintas. 🙂

Get off Fahaheel Expressway to 6th Ring heading to airport, after the Ministries Zone the Science Club will be off the highway to the right. Coincidentally the Kuwait Little League is located pretty much in the same place too.

  6. Sorry for the dual-comments, I’m not much on Arabic but have someone translate this for you: http://www.ksclub.org/

That is the Kuwait Science Club website. 🙂

  7. Я – Yeh, but sometimes the place names here are all over the map, LOOLLLL! I am interested; 6th ring is a bright-light district, can you get good astronomical observations with all the ambient light?

I can read the words, but I don’t have the vocabulary to know what they mean on the ksclub website. Pretty cool.

  8. I don’t know if it is too late to answer. Fintas observatory exists and belongs to amateur astronomer Adel Hasan. He has the observatory in his house and open to everyone. I never been there and I don’t know how big is the telescope.

There is other observatory located in Kuwait Science Club on 6th Ring Road. Check out our website for map and info about it http://www.astronomy.ksclub.org/
