Expiration Dates

Thank God for other bloggers. Simply Stinni, in addition to having some drop-dead fabulous recipes, often has good little tips for shopping in Kuwait. One reminded me to check expiration dates, something I just don’t even think about doing.

As I was preparing for a party, I needed some cream cheese for a dip. When I checked the expiration date, this is what I saw:

From August 2007 to May 2008? Horrors! I am aghast. What kinds of preservatives would you have to use to give cream cheese such a long shelf life??

There must be some local equivalent, a very mild soft cheese that I could use. You know I love buying local, buying fresh – help me out here. What can I use in place of processed cream cheese?

  1. Hey, thanks for the mention. 🙂 Have you tried Kiri cheese? It’s cream cheese but a bit softer than Philadelphia.

  4. Just eat it! It’s really not a big deal, unless you want to completely change your food habits!

  5. Not yet, Stinni, but I will try it soon! It’s a thing I have, trying to find local equivalents that work as well. It’s a pleasure to mention your intelligent and humorous blog, Stinni; you are one of my favorites.

Kiri Niege sounds like the name of an Eskimo detective, Enigma! 😉 I’m guessing it is the same cheese Stinni talks about? Is it a packaged cheese or a cheese you get from the cheese guy? Can I get it at the Co-op or only at the Sultan Center?

That photo above IS Philadelphia, Fonzy! I’m just guessing that something local might contain fewer preservatives. I’d like to try.

We ate it, BIE! It was all I had! And you are right, it is reliable and good. I’d like to find a local-made equivalent. And yes, one of the big changes is trying to find less processed foods.

  6. Hahaha why’s it enigmatic? No, it’s packaged, and you can get it anywhere, that’s what it looks like: http://www.taw9eel.com/productphoto/prophoto1309.jpg

I don’t know about now, but when they first started producing it it would expire pretty fast. It’s really good, I could easily go through half the jar at one sitting (i love cheese lol)

I think neige is snow in French?

  7. and while we’re on the subject of dairy, Activia yoghurt is really good!

  8. Holy Smokes. Enigma, I am so glad you included that photo. I would never have known what to look for. It comes in a jar! I will have to try it.

And I will have to try Activia, too. I’ve been buying Al Marais because it comes in NON-FAT, but I don’t think you have to worry about fat!

Enigmatic because all you put was the name, no explanation, but then I saw Stinni’s comment and I understood. It still gave me a good laugh.

Yes, niege is snow in French.

  12. For my filled chicken I use Labneh now instead of Creme cheese.
Dunno if that would work with your recipe though.
    That exp. date is – uhm – yacki…. 😉

  13. Fonzy – holy smokes, you must be SO bored!

Ohhh, Nicole, Lebneh – what a good idea! Like cream cheese but with a sharp little tang . . . .ummmm, good!

  14. Mh, my Labneh doesn’t have a tang,….just cream cheese 🙂
    (And not expensive 😉 )
