Here There and Everywhere

Kuwait Camels

When we used to drive around Qatar, we would see camels out roaming everywhere. I imagine it used to be that way in Kuwait, too, until the Gulf War, when the retreating Iraqis seeded the deserts with explosive devices. Even now, every month a shepherd or two loses a limb to an unexploded piece of ordnance in the desert. We don’t just jump in the car and go out exploring here – sadly, it’s not safe, or it’s only safe when you are with people who know where it is safe and where it isn’t. We have friends who tell us, with a sigh, about the beautiful places they would go to see the wildflowers, but no more.

Now and then we will see a camel in a large, empty nearby plot of land, under the sparse trees, sometimes a mother with a baby. Most of the time, I only see camels when I go to shop at the Sultan Center in Al Kout. There is also a very large fresh vegetable, chicken/egg, meat and fish market there, and when I see these unsuspecting and unconcerned camels in the back of a truck, I have a bad feeling that they are destined for the meat market.

  8. Thank you, Ananyah, he feels better now.

Nicole – I am shocked! You see these camel trucks all the time in Al Kout; only maybe three or four times a year with the camels. There are also great fishing boat shots to be had there, and great market shots. Do you visit the market area behind the Sultan Center?

Thanks, Amu, glad you like it.

Fonzy . . . would you even know? I don’t know what it tastes like. I don’t think I have ever eaten it, but sometimes you eat things to be polite and you don’t know what you are eating!

  13. About the only time I have seen camels freely wander in the streets of Kuwait was during the invasion in 1990. Is there a thriving camel meat market in Kuwait ? If there is one, I think it is a travesty that whereas on the one hand Kuwaitis like to call the camel their national animal and on the other hand, they have no qualms about transporting camels to the slaughter house.
In the old days I had a ride on camel back once at the celebrity infested Juhu beach. This was back when animal rights activists were still in their Pampers. we’d love for there to be a mile long sandy patch up beside the promenade at Al Kout exclusively for camel rides.

  14. Rainmountain – I think you have to be there in the earlier part of the day, maybe?

Kylie – I know that voice!

You were HERE in the invasion?

I don’t think there is a thriving market, but I bet there is a small market. There always has been in other parts of the Gulf, Jordan, Syria, etc. It is probably a more humane death than getting too old and starving in the desert, don’t you think?
