New Kuwait Traffic Fines

A new e-mail flying around Kuwait gives the new traffic fines. At first, I thought this was a joke, but it looks pretty serious. Will someone please explain why a Jordanian car would get such a stiff fine?

And I remember a lot of discussion about penalties for talking on a mobile phone while driving, but when did the law pass? Was there any announcement? And babies in the front seat, not allowed, when did that change? All of this is amazing to me, I am still wondering if it is a hoax?

Do you think the police will really enforce these laws?

Kuwait Weirdness

This is such a small thing, but just TOO WEIRD! In the tiny little weather forecast in today’s Kuwait Times, it says that today’s weather will reach a high of 48°C and tonight will reach a low of 32°C. Like Weather Underground says 24°C/14° – that’s very different. It was hot today, but much more like 24° than a summery 48°C (118.4°F.)

More weirdness – isn’t there any warning when a major road is going to close, you know, like GULF ROAD??? I was caught in the quagmire today, trying to get home and not able to get on Gulf Road and seeing all the north-south major roads in total gridlock. What is this??? I never saw a word, not in Arab Times, not in Kuwait Times, not in the blogs – did anyone know this was coming?

Lighten Up!

More from Arab Times – guys, it’s just for fun. It’s just a day for sweet cards and taking your sweetie out for dinner – this isn’t a pagan anything.

Seeing red on roses … Group warns on Valentine’s Day

KUWAIT : Thawabet Al Umma, an Islamic group, has condemned the celebration of Valentine’s Day and warned the media against misguiding Muslims by “glorifying such pagan practices.” The media is playing an important role in popularizing such celebrations and leading Islamic nations on the path of disbelief, the group added. “Such traditions are imported from the West, and people blindly follow them without looking into the good and bad aspects. Participating in such celebrations will tarnish the image of Islam.”

WordPress Summarizes Referrers

I was just roaming around, and discovered that the Summarize feature is also working on Referrers, in WordPress. What an eye opener – see where the majority of your visitors have come from through the entire life of your blog!

You go to your Blog Stats page, click Referrers, and you will see a range of options, including Quarter and Life Time of the Blog. Click any for the summary of all your referrers. Amazing.

Oh wow. I just checked Search Engine Terms – it’s there, too, and they also have a summary by year! And in the Clicks section! (The all-time top click is for my niece, Little Diamond, followed by I Can Has Cheezburger.

Sunrise 12 Feb 2008 With Clouds

It was a spectacle this morning – the sun fighting it’s way through the clouds, rays of light forcing their way through. I felt like it was a special gift to get the day going!

It is SO hot! The temperature yesterday got up to 70° something and it is already 63°F/17°C at 0800. Whew!

Weekly Stats

The WordPress week goes from Monday to Monday, so I try to check my stats on Mondays, see how I am doing on a weekly basis. Now that I have learned how to take photos of things on my desk, I am a moster! I can do anything!

I was totally on a roll up to Christmas. Huge drop between Christmas and New Years, and then back up – and FLAT! Four weeks, each with almost exactly the same amount of readers. Have I hit my plateau?

Sex Chemistry Lasts Two Years

From BBC Health News (you can read the entire article by clicking on the blue type) It makes me smile to note that both of the studies mentioned are conducted by the Italians. 🙂

Sex chemistry ‘lasts two years’
Certain hormones are active during the ‘acute love’ phase

Couples should not worry when the first flush of passion dims – scientists have identified the hormone changes which cause the switch from lust to cuddles.

A team from the University of Pisa in Italy found the bodily chemistry which makes people sexually attractive to new partners lasts, at most, two years.

When couples move into a “stable relationship” phase, other hormones take over, Chemistry World reports.

But one psychologist warned the hormone shift is wrongly seen as negative.

Dr Petra Boynton, of the British Psychological Society, said there was a danger people might feel they should take hormone supplements to make them feel the initial rush of lust once more.

‘Not ever-lasting’

The Italian researchers tested the levels of the hormones called neutrophins in the blood of volunteers who were rated on a passionate love scale.

Levels of these chemical messengers were much higher in those who were in the early stages of romance.

Testosterone was also found to increase in love-struck women, but to reduce in men when they are in love.

But in people who had been with their partners for between one and two years these so-called “love molecules” had gone, even though the relationship had survived.

The scientists found that the lust molecule was replaced by the so-called “cuddle hormone” – oxytocin – in couples who had been together for several years.

Oxytocin, is a chemical that induces labour and milk-production in new and pregnant mothers.

Donatella Marazziti, who led the research team, said: “If lovers swear their feelings to be ever-lasting, the hormones tell a different story.”

Similar research conducted by Enzo Emanuele at the University of Pavia found that levels of a chemical messenger called nerve growth factor (NGF) increased with romantic intensity.

After one to two years, NGF levels had reduced to normal.

So Oxycontin, when it kicks in, is more like the commitment glue, and the earlier chemicals are more like lust?

One Day, Two Sunrises 11 Feb 2008

I didn’t think we were going to have any kind of photographable sunrise today, and, to my surprise, I got two. It almost looks like two totally different days, but it is just the way the light changed within minutes:

Here is how warm it has become in Kuwait – the Qatteri Cat is not snuggled up next to me at night to absorb every possible ray of emitted heat. 😦

I think the local schools are back from their winter breaks – traffic has once again become frantic and hostile some parts of the day.
