Here There and Everywhere

Hot as . . .

Night before last, for the first time, I saw my husband’s temperature gizmo in the car register 50°C – and that was at 8 PM.

In Kuwait, if the temperature registers 50°C, work is supposed to cease. The official temperature gauges on buildings downtown never go above 49°C. But if the temperature outside is still 50°C at 8 at night, wouldn’t you think it would be higher during mid-day?

He had visitors in town the other day, visitors who were so fascinated with the heat that they took photos of his dashboard temperature gauge.

It is unbelievably hot.

  1. Kinda makes one wish for the dust to return, at least it was cooler ;p

This year has been record breaking or close to it when it comes to weather conditions…the dustiest year for kuwait, earth quake in china, typhoon in the Burmese, various blizzards and storms in North America, the Monsoon season, flood in the Philippines, etc

    Wonder what’s going on?

  2. Well, according to the Company of Liars book, things like this happen all the time. At the time, it seems significant, but it’s all part of a grand global natural scheme we just haven’t figured out yet. Can you imagine a year when it rains every day for six months?

  3. I remember being told the same thing about 50 degree weather nearly ten years ago, when I visited the Emirates from the first time. But I also remember being told that the official temperature never reached 50, and never would. Have you ever seen the work stoppage law go into effect?

On the other hand, I’ve never seen a copy of the law stating this, so I’ve also wondered whether it might not be simply urban legend. But if the law is mentioned in the local papers, then my urban legend theory is wrong :).

  4. Never, Little Diamond. I feel so sorry for the construction workers, and the highway workers . . . and imagine being a fireman, you have to put out fires and you have to wear all that protective clothing in his heat. People faint!
