Andorra, Smoking and Life Expectancy

This little illustration was part of an e-mail a friend sent this week, but it reminded me of a special I heard a couple weeks ago on BBC about Andorra.

Andorra has the highest life expectancy of any country in the world. When people try to figure out why, they think it must be because people are physically active there, all their lives. The elderly are encouraged to go to the gyms, prices are greatly subsidized for all citizens, like gyms and water aerobics classes and EVERYBODY stays fit.

They have the longest life expectancy in spite of the fact that many many of the Andorrans are also smokers. Go figure.

  1. wouldn’t be surprised.
Tabacco does lower life expectancy but not quite as much as 50 years of ben and jerries on the couch every night …..

  2. We have to wait for next year 2009 list , for sure the Icelandic people will have a shorter life span after what will happen to them this winter as a fall out of the financial meltdown .

The country is bankrupt , they are begging money from the Russians . The Brits are refusing to facilitate any financial assistance to Iceland based on some obscure laws .
In reality the Brits want to punish the Icelandic people because of the COD war between Britain and Iceland that took place in 1975 to 1976 .

when Iceland stopped British boats from fishing and catching COd in the waters off Iceland to the point where the gunboats of the two countries collided in the offshore waters .

The Brits never forgotten that incident and now the Icelandic people will pay for it , No Money ,what will they do for living , how would they pay for heating this winter, and pay for food or even fuel to go fishing .
The Brits sure know how to hold a grudge

  3. KTDP – LLOOOLLL! I think the dismal Kuwait figures on diabetes, hypertension and heart disease probably start right there on the couch. BTW, the Kuwait syndrome hits expats, too.

Daggero, LOL, I disagree with you once again – I bet it’s all that eating fish that give the Icelanders such a long life. Also learning to live with less, a little self control, it’s all good for you. I speak from experience! It’s how the Andorrans can have the longest life expectancy with all their smoking that I don’t understand!

  5. Andorra’s high life expectancy is a function of it being a tiny tax haven for old, rich retirees, stupid.
Why are there so many obtuse, ignorant stupid people in the world.

    • Maybe too much rain and cold in Ireland is making you cynical and bitter? Those who call others stupid will probably do well to remember to put a question mark at the end of a question.
