Heading for the Desert

Every now and then I wish I were a man. When I was a little kid, our dads would all head out on a big boat, going hunting. Mostly, women stayed home. Some women hunted, but it is hard work, and, I think, maybe men don’t always want women along when they go out hunting, they want to (in Alaska) drink and party and play cards and talk crude and don’t want anyone around reminding them to mind their manners.

The truth is I don’t know what they do. I can only imagine, based on things I’ve heard, movies, my imagination.

Today, my neighbors are headed out to hunt. How do I know? They have their falcon with them. It is perfect weather – clear, relatively cool, the heat has definitely broken, it is wonderful to be able to drive without any air conditioning. . . .

I know, I know, there is still this kid in my heart that thinks that going hunting with a FALCON is very very cool.

  6. i can tell you almost every single woman (myself included) had at one time or the other wanted to hunt, get into a fist fight and shave her head, Demi Moore style (have u seen GI JANE?). Ive always been interested in archery and i have ALWAYS ALWAYS wanted to know the feeling of having a free, weightless shaved head! no fuss!

  7. Q8Geek, LLOOLL, you set me up, didn’t you?

No! No! Mrm, I have never wanted a shaved head! LLOOOLLLL, but I have taken archery – I wasn’t very good; it takes a LOT of arm strength. Fist fight . . . no, not really . . . but I still have a yen to take karate, as long as I DON’T have to fight (I have a horror of missing teeth or broken face-bones). But in my graduate studies, I was the only woman in most of my classes, and I excelled in a primarily male area . . . does that count?

  8. I worked with the Peregrine Fund for several summers, reintroducing peregrines to habitat, dropping defrosted quail through a tube at the hack site.

It was incredible watching them hunt, so beautiful. I absolutely understand the desire to hunt with a falcon. Not to mention that I love to eat wild duck and hate spitting shot out through my teeth…
