Romantic Getaway in Doha

AdventureMan whisked me away to Doha for a weekend, to visit friends and the new Islamic Museum. There is a new boutique hotel in the restored market area, the Hotel Souk Waqif – and this area is THE place to be at night. The hotel is only 17 exquisite rooms, beautifully furnished, great customer service, and has promotional rates going right now at the best time of the year to visit. It is surrounded by great restaurants, and has great views in three directions. The rooms are lush and richly furnished.

Update: The website for the Souk Waqif Hotel is up and running here: Hotel Souq Waqif

This sign always cracks me up – in a parking lot near Electricity Street (Sharaa Kharaba)

  2. Bismilla???? LOL, that is the original hotel that was there even when the souk was old and scary and non-restored! Did they restore the Bismilla, too? I like the views and the spaciousness of the Souk Waqif, but I would be willing to try another hotel if it were spacious and quiet and had great views.

I love this souk, too. πŸ™‚ And oh, WOW, all the restaurants!

  4. They’ve done a great job with the old market. Attention to all the details. Their new down-town is also very impressive, But who will be based there? Are there really that many businesses in the Gulf?

Enjoy the museam. I love the building – I’ve only seen it from the outside – it wasn’t opened yet.

  5. Little Diamond – The entire street is scheduled to be leveled and rebuilt, modern. Most stores on the street are closing. We took some record-keeping photos of some of our old haunts. You would be shocked. Doha is not the same.

Bu Yousef – I agree. There are rumors that many of the newly built skyscrapers have serious deficiencies in construction, and major international companies have had them inspected and refused to move in. (!) Nonetheless, to see the change that has occurred in a mere six years is awe-inspiring, to say the very least.

The market restoration is a marvel. And the new QCPI building, which is called, I think, Fanar.

The museum is fantastic. More to come tomorrow!
