Kuwait Attorneys Defend Constitution

From today’s Al Watan:

Attorneys defend the Constitution
A group of young attorneys gather in front of the Palace of Justice on Tuesday to declare a new movement to defend the Constitution and its values. Nearly 100 female and male lawyers took part in the gathering. (Al Watan)

That’s it. That’s all there is. This photo, and the above two-sentence article:

It feels significant, but the significance is opaque to me. Can someone give me an idea why this group formed, and against what encroachments are they are defending the Kuwait Constitution?

  1. probably to voice their objection to some voices that are calling for a (non-constitutional) dissolvement of the parliament by the Amir.

Many constitutionalist believe such calls, despite what one may think of the current MP’s performance, are abhorent.

  4. I sincerely doubt this will happen but rumors in Kuwait tend to spread like wildfire and there has been talk that there would be an unconstitutional dissolving of the parliament. This would be disastrous to our notion of democracy but given that the parliament is also relatively despised by the people some people have gone into this zoned out territory where they actually don’t think it’s a bad idea. SO I don’t anything about these lawyers and it’s the first time I see this on your blog but I guess they’re there to show that there are people against this idea IN CASE anyone is seriously thinking of doing it. (And I don’t think anyone is at this stage)

  5. Thanks, 1001. You are probably right – but the news article covers the protest WITHOUT telling us what their point is! This is a complicated time, isn’t it, with elected lawmakers in whom few have much faith?

We (in the USA) have our own problems with posturing, and pork-barrels (I wonder – LOL – what pork-barrel legislation is called in the Middle East?) and corrupt legislators who use their position for personal gain. I guess this is as old as history. But what to do?
