Al Shamal and Zubara – A Day Trip

A great day, temperatures down, a breeze blowing, a sky with clouds (Qatar sky is almost always flat blue), a perfect day for a trip to the north, Al Shamel and Fort Zubara:

I had no idea the highway was torn up all the way from Landmark Mall to Al Shamel.

Aarrgh.

The old camel crossing sign we used to stop and take photos of our guests at was down.

And a great day altogether, anyway.

  2. LLOOLLL, Little Diamond, I know they will put those signs up again, when the road work is completed. But all those camels who used to be hobbled, but free, are now behind a very long, very strong big fence, and I think there is electricity running through the fence. Probably one too many problems hitting camels at night along the unlit roads . . .

    There is alot of history regarding the forts in the Gulf area Bahrain and Oman , Mainly to do with the portuguese invasion of India and the Gulf . Unfortunately it is very much ignored and not taught in schools .

  4. Portuguese? LOL, no I never hear anything about the Portuguese in these parts. I somehow thought Zubara was in one of the oldest areas of Qatar, settlements, like Kout in Kuwait – fortified settlements, yes, to protect from invasion from the sea . . . but I never considered from/by whom. Portuguese? I might have thought pirates. There is so much I don’t know . . . (sigh)

    Definitely you are mesinformed about the history in these parts!!!!

    Try to learn yourself about it’s history and you will find out that Portuguese were all over these parts!!
