New Doha Details

Once I shot the skyline, that perfect morning last week, I had to drive down the Corniche and pick up some details. If Doha were more stop-friendly, there would be more. Sometimes, I am holding up the camera and shooting and not even able to see what exactly I am shooting because I am really focused on driving.

The good news is, for some reason, there isn’t a lot of traffic in the “business” section of Doha. Most buildings are still under construction, still unoccupied. But there are some spectacular buildings.

Some of the new buildings are breathtaking:

  2. I love the right-most building in the first picture. Reminds me of a building in Barcelona. They both look almost identical, save for the spire on the Qatar one. Here’s a link

  3. Chika! Haven’t seen you for a long time! Welcome!

Oh Kinan, you are right, they are very similar. The same building is second to last, up close; I love the meshrabiyya they are putting over the building, gives it some distinction and a tip of the hat to heritage . . .

On the other hand, ever since the photo of this building went up it has sort of made me blanche. If building buildings is a sort of ego thing, like men do, compete on whose is biggest, some of the buildings are more . . . hmmm. . . blatantly phallic . . . than others. This is one of the more blatantly . . . err. . . competitive, in my humble opinion, LLLLOOOOLLLLLL.

  5. I like the bullet looking one. These buildings look like star war ones. I bet Hollywood will shoot some movies there in the future. Are there any light trains or public transit around?

  7. That is good to know. Do people like to ride bicycles there? Hope they have bike trails.

How about Kuwait? Public transit and biking to work etc.?

  8. Some people ride bicycles, Polar Panda, but they are taking their lives in their hands. The motorists here are not careful about people on bicycles and there are no designated bicycle lanes. Kuwait – same thing. Not a great place to ride a bike on public streets. Bus public transportation, very basic, with hopes of light rail in the future.

In early February every year there is a huge bicycle race, with teams from everywhere, and they clear the roads in different areas everyday for that.
