A Change in the Weather

Last night I woke up, startled, and realized how quiet it was. I could hear a tiny ‘click – click – click’ of the overhead fan, but no air conditioning. It was so quiet, I kept listening for it to come on again, but I fell asleep again while I was waiting. I still haven’t heard it come on yet this morning.

The weather in Pensacola right now is heaven. 🙂

No waking up at night feeling too hot and breathless. No sweating first thing in the morning when you go out to pick up your newspaper, or to water the tomatoes.

Actually, I cleaned out a lot of the containers this week, as the tomatoes have stopped producing and while I still have peppers, I don’t see any new ones coming.

We do have a garden full of birds, butterflies and squirrels. Whoever owned this house before we did, put in the perfect garden for attracting them all, a variety of lantana, something with loads of golden yellow berries, a red vine the hummingbirds love. Our favorites are the hummingbirds and the cardinals, with their flashy plumage, but every bird coming gives us joy.

This morning, I was able to sit outside with my coffee and watch. One of the squirrels sent out a warning to all the other squirrels, and scolded me for sitting outside, but the birds and butterflies didn’t mind me one bit.

AdventureMan had a real adventure this week as he was working in the garden; he was stung by a wasp, and then just a short time later, stung by another. At the second sting, he realized there must be a nest forming somewhere nearby, so he found it – hidden in the back gate – and quickly took care of it.

I also got our RainBird working this week, after months of living here. Every so often I went out and fiddled with it, but could not get it working. Finally, I followed the connection until I found a swtich box where the circuit was the only switch marked ‘off.’ Turning it to ‘on’ was the magic cure; the RainBird is operational just in time for the coming dry season. Woo Hooo on me. 🙂

  1. Ouch! Wasps are no fun! Glad he isn’t allergic to them.

The garden and the wildlife sound wonderful.

I’m happy to report our weather is also cooling down, just to a different “degree.” 🙂

(Unfortunately the comment section won’t let me post the weather forecast like you have in the main post.) But, daytime is dropping into the low 100’s; night time is dropping into the low 70’s. The best news is that after the first week in October the historical average drops about 1C every two days and the average high is in the mid-80’s by the end of the month.

  2. Oh! I remember those days! It seems to me October was around when we could start eating outside again, like alongside the fountains in Fehaheel, our outside at Mubarakiyya, without melting. Kuwait is so lovely when it starts to cool off! Do you have a balcony?

  3. Great shot of the beach ,it looks so pristine and no traces of oil is there . I hope the waterfront life and business is back to where it was before the explosion of BP’s rig and people got their life back .

Speaking of watering the tomatoes , the price of tomatoes has gone through the roof here in Kuwait from 500 ($1.50) fils per small box to KD 2.5 that’s right Kd2.5 ($7.50) for the same .Some blogs launched a campaign to boycott buying tomatoes under the slogan ” Let it Rot” to force the merchants to reduce their prices . lets see if this succeed .

So for Christmas present send a box of tomatoes to your friends here in Kuwait

  5. LOL, Daggero, tomato growing season starts soon in Kuwait! Some of the most delicious tomatoes I have ever tasted have been grown in friends’ gardens there! So – grow your own! When I was living there, my Christmas gift to one friend (hmmm maybe it was an Eid gift) was a variety of heirloom tomatoes and cherry tomatoes. It was so much fun seeing what would grow and what didn’t do so well. He also always had bumper crops of cilantro, parsley and basil. 🙂

Oh Mrm, I LOVE love love the cooler weather, and being able to open doors and windows to have FRESH air. I am in heaven!

I forgot to tell you, I didn’t take that photo, I went to a Pensacola website and lifted it. It is Pensacola Beach, and things are back to normal – I see lots of folk out eating seafood, I see hiring signs in stores, I see more people in the stores. The country seems to be coming out of the recession, but mistrustrully, not yet willing to engage in the exuberant consumerism of the ’80’s and that is probably a good thing. Slow recovery is a more stable recovery, based more on solid economics than flickering perceptions, IMHO.
