10,000 Steps Continued
As you know, I began an exercise program a few weeks ago called 10,000 Steps – you can find out more about it here: 10,000 Steps. I don’t have very good luck with gyms . . . it’s just a waste of money for me; I sign up all enthusiastic, and by the second day at the gym I am already trying to find ways to get out of it. I get bored. Exercise is BORING!
But I love walking. Actually I love water aerobics, too, when there aren’t a bunch of googly-eyed guys watching, and when I have a gaggle of girlfriends to laugh and pass the time with while we exercise and I just don’t have that opportunity in Kuwait.
So I got sick and tired of myself NOT exercising and decided to work on 10,000 steps. I’ve been doing pretty well, too, worked up to running 6,000 steps before I left, and it only takes me about 35 minutes.
The other day I bought a pedometer. Today I put it on for the first time.
You have to understand, when I come back to Seattle, I have THE LIST with me. The list is all the things that are hard to get or impossible to get in Kuwait, or just annoying to have to track down. Occasionally, like this time, I also have things to get for friends. . . just a little thing here and there, but it all goes on THE LIST.
Around noon I called my Mom and said I would be by in about an hour with lunch. When I got there, I remembered I had my pedometer on, and I checked it – I was already at 9,081 steps! By the time I got back to my hotel, it had started over.
I love it. I am tired at the end of each day from running around, my legs even ache and my feet hurt and I love it. Even the hot days – there were two of them, and now it is cloudy and it is going to rain and they just don’t get it at all that I LOVE the rain – the hot days weren’t that bad.
I am going to be in PAIN when I get back to Kuwait and face days of 115°F again! It is 70°F / 21° C in Seattle today.

My eyes just popped out of my head. As I was checking the blog, I saw that the current temperature has hit 109° F.
Hello??? This is May, not even mid-May. Holy Smokes, if this is what May looks like, I can hardly wait to see summer (said with tongue in cheek.)

I don’t know what happened, but I know you guys don’t get paid and that you do this out of the goodness of your hearts, as a public service to the Kuwait community. God bless the work of your hands. AdventureMan said the highways were empty this morning as he headed in to work. What does this mourning period do to the elections in Kuwait, scheduled for this Saturday? Will they be postponed?
Sunrise May 13, 2008
The sea is as flat as old glass, a little ripple here and there. You can squint your eyes up and see all the way to Failaka Island, all the big freighters puffing up and down the gulf, the Coast Guard boats heading out to interdict a drug runner or some illegally immigrant, a few little speed boats.
The temperature is 75°F / 24°C and the high expected is in the low 100’s. It looks like another warm glorious day in Kuwait.

Just in time! As I was trying to take the photo out my dust-spotted windows, clouds came in from the south and created a dramatic light and dark contrast. The temperature at 0600 is 86°F / 26°C and the forecast for today is “clear” LOL!
It looks to me like we could have some rain; the clouds coming in are thick and threatening.
Quiet Morning Sunrise May 8, 2008
It wasn’t the Qatteri Cat ready for some fun and excitement. It wasn’t AdventureMan “purring.” I woke with a start, thinking “I have to remember to get an appointment for a teeth cleaning!” and once that adrenaline was running through my veins, I knew I wasn’t going to be able to get back to sleep. It was early, but not WAY early. The sun was just up, and it was a beautiful and quiet time of the day.
Who knows why we are wired the way we are wired? I love the holiness of the earliest hours of the day. AdventureMan and QC are still sleeping, I have my coffee, the sun is rising. Alhamd’allah, life is serene and sweet.
It is only 79°F / 26°C, but it is also only 5:45 ayem.
Indistinct Sunrise

Jewaira Sunrise
When I saw the sunrise this morning, I thought of Jewaira, another blogger who in her own way and in her own head is also here, there and everywhere. She loves silvery sunrises, and oh man, this is one shimmering, silvery sunrise:
It must be the haze that exaggerates the size of the sun so – and makes it appear to throb, even in the photo.

Sunrise and Splotches
It’s a teeny bit hazy this morning, but the sun rose bright over the water, there is just a tiny bit of ripple on the otherwise glassy surface of the Gulf (cleverly sidestepping whether it is the “Arabian” Gulf or the “Persian” Gulf).
It is a mere 86°F / 30°C at 0730 and not expected to break 100°F.
Yesterday, AdventureMan and I had a late lunch, noticing as we entered and left the restaurant how beautiful the weather is – even though it is hotting up, it was comfortable enough outside, still bearable, even enjoyable. Not for much longer (sigh!)
Until I can get my rain-splotched windows cleaned, I will have the splotches you see . . . I can’t open the windows to shoot out for fear the Qatteri Cat will jump out!
Not your Kuwaiti Dust Storm
This is from Thursday’s Arab Times. Although it is not new news, it contains information I didn’t know – that the sand, full of allergens, was not Kuwaiti dust, and we can expect another storm Tuesday and many through the summer, due to lack of rainfall.
Storm you can ‘taste’
KUWAIT CITY : The sandstorm that raged in parts of Kuwait Wednesday afternoon was carried by Southwesterly winds blowing from North of Saudi Arabia and South of Syria and Iraq at speeds of 55 km/hr, says Musaed Al Hammad, head of Mirzam Observatory. He was talking to the Arab Times soon after his observatory conducted studies on the storm. Musaed said “In Kuwait City and Ahmedi the wind speed was 36 km/hr. The visibility in most parts affected by the dust storm was about 100 m, while in the Kuwait City it was reduced to zero. The sandstorm forced airport authorities to divert incoming flights to neighboring countries, operations manager at Kuwait International Airport, Issam Al Zamel told a news agency.

Mirzam Observatory sent samples of the dust to a laboratory, and tests revealed that the dust particles were not from the deserts of Kuwait, and contained cement particles and allergy-causing germs, the astronomer said.
Musaed added breathing in such particles is potentially risky for people prone to bronchitis and other respiratory illnesses. “This finding could open new vistas in the treatment of allergies in Kuwait. “Dust storms arising out of Kuwaiti deserts are usually very slow and linger for a long time, unlike the one that hit Kuwait like a flash on Wednesday. “The visibility was reduced to very low levels because as the storm arrived in Kuwait the wind lost steam and the dust particles gathered in the atmosphere,” Musaed noted. . . . .
As the rainfall was scant this year, all wind conditions in summer will likely turn into dust storms, Musaed said. “So we can expect more dust storms in the future.” Mirzam Observatory has forecasted another dust storm next week on Tuesday. “However, it will not be as bad as Wednesday’s. The dust storms in future will be much milder.”
