Spicy Peppers Attack Cancer

The BBC reports today that a link has been discovered between spicy hot peppers and cancer cell death. Click here:How Spicy Foods Kill Cancer

In short, the article states:

“Scientists have discovered the key to the ability of spicy foods to kill cancer cells.

They found capsaicin, an ingredient of jalapeno peppers, triggers cancer cell death by attacking mitochondria – the cells’ energy-generating boiler rooms.

The research raises the possibility that other cancer drugs could be developed to target mitochondria.”

Buried deep in the article is the disclaimer that no one believes eating a lot of hot spicy peppers will either prevent nor cure cancer, and that peppers as a part of a diet that includes a lot of vegetables and fruit are recommended.

That said, I think I am going to use the as an excuse for making my jambalaya even hotter.

  3. dear earthling – your jambalaya is strong enough to cure most cancers already. as for me, I’m living in the hope that salt, my favorite spice, will some day be found good (rather than bad!) for my health.

  4. Earthling and Little Diamond – Whew! I agree! Is it even possible for that Jambalaya to get any hotter??? Please, Earthling, let it be the way it is!

I think the hot peppers and salt gene must be a family thing. . .

Abdulaziz – I think there are worse things for us than hot peppers! Like frites and chips and sugary donuts!

And I am also thinking – isn’t Kuwaiti food fairly spicy? Don’t Kuwaitis use peppers? I think the Indian influence on Gulf cuisine has a healthy impact . . .

  6. Fortunately I like hot peppers, and they are full of vitamin C, which has been thought to cure about everything, and capsacin is a recognized pain killer, so who knows.

  7. Riannan – Welcome! I am addicted to the hot, oily pepper some Chinese restaurants serve. I like a little heat, too.
