Thursday? Friday? Saturday?

Today’s Kuwait Times quotes an “official source” as stating that Kuwait will move to a Friday Saturday weekend as of the 1st of September, and that Kuwait is also looking at daylight savings time starting next Spring. Seems like this trial balloon has floated a time or two before, do you think it will fly this time?

Somehow, it feels in Kuwait like the weekend now is Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The expats seem to be working a six day week (except for the maids, who work 24/7) and everyone seems to take it easier all three days. Wonder if this is really going to happen?

  1. I advocate a 7 day weekend.

  2. I am against unifying the weekend. The reason is because we have a bad rush hour traffic situation and overcrowded airport. Right now the banks, financial institutions and companies that have international dealings already have a Friday-Saturday weekend, others have a Thursday-Friday weekend. If you unify the weekend, we will get a worse traffic situation with everyone going to work at the same time and everyone skipping out of Kuwait during the new Friday-Saturday weekend at the same time.

  3. Purg – You’d get bored.

Don Veto – Hmmmmm. Hadn’t thought of that. You’re right, it will make a bad situation even worse.

I didn’t know that banks and Financial institutions in Kuwait were on a Friday-Saturday weekend already. Does that include the Kuwait stock exchange?

  4. The Kuwait stock market works from Saturday till Wednsday. It is only financial institutions that deal with foreign markets like brokerages, banks and international investment companies.

  5. saturday off for me would be great cos then atleast i’d get one day where i dont have to turn my tv or pc on. right now its sat-wednesday for the kuwaiti market, and monday to friday for the rest of the world.

and altho don veto is right about the traffic, i think traffics a minor issue compared to syncing up with the global banking system πŸ˜›

insurrance companies are also friday sat at the moment.

  6. I neither work at a bank nor a financial institution but we have a Friday/Saturday weekend. I’d love for Kuwait to follow this. At least we will be in Sync with the world for five days of the week instead of six.

And DST?! WHY? It’s the stupidest concept ever created by man. Why observe it?!?!?!?

  7. Thank you, Don Veto.

Skunk, you have a wonderful life. And I am betting that no matter what the day off is, you would turn on the TV and/or PC. πŸ™‚

    Kinan – oh! lucky you!

I agree, DST in Kuwait doesn’t seem to make a lot of sense. In Seattle, in Germany, it gives you an extra hour of sunlight at the end of the day, which is lovely on a warm summer’s evening.
