Kuwait Infant Mortality Rate

This very sad little item is from last week’s Kuwait Times:

Officials at the Ministry of Health disclosed that deaths among newborn infants were increasing at an alarming rate in Kuwait due to premature births and delayed deliveries over the past couple of years. The rate they said, touched 17.9 per thousand during the year 2006, in addition to the drastic decline in the quality of healthcare accorded to newborn infants. They called for urgent decisions to be taken to improve the healthcare for newborn infants.

Deaths among infants increased from 8.4 per thousand in the year 2005 to 9.1 per thousand during 2006.

The Jahra Governorate reported the highest rate of deaths among infants. Statistics indicated that 28.9 percent of the infants’ deaths were caused due to the short pregnancy period and inadequate weight of the infants when born and 17.2 percent were caused by various congenital deficiencies.

  1. Hm.. they have to consider age of the bride – family relations- most people in Jahra marry off their girls to cousins and family members, which doesn’t help… it’s so sad …

  3. I didn’t know that, Chikapappi, but it’s not just Jahra. It’s a 9% INCREASE in one year across the board in Kuwait. That is horrifying.

Yes, Amu, it is really sad. 😦

  4. Very sad. The health system in the whole country is suffering. I would assume other types of deaths, and hospital negligences are on a rise.

  5. this is an absolutely unbelievable number !! … i really need to double check on this .. one thing im sure of is that the 2006 vital stats. are not “officially ” published yet ..
Hope these numbers are not acurate because perinatal mortality is one of the most sensitive indicators of a peoples health status.

  6. N. I think you are right. Statistics are hard to find in Kuwait, especially ones where people might be tempted to kill the messenger.

Abdulaziz – when I first saw it, I felt sick for two days. I couldn’t print it. I waited a week. I hope it is wrong, but I am finding that the Kuwait Times is very forward looking, is good at printing things, even bad news, in tiny little articles that later turn out to be true. Very brave.

  7. Not this time,, i have the official numbers on my hands..
    Infant mortality rate for 2006 was 8.6 per 1000. 2005 was 8.2 per 1000. 2002 was 9.6 per 1000.\
i checked all the other infant parameters ( still birth rate, perinatal mortality rate and under 5 years mortality ) all were within normal yearly variations.

these are Official, so i dont know where the paper got their numbers from !!

  8. Hunhhh. They even have a different statistic for 2005 – 8.2/thousand vs 8.4/thousand.

And 9.1 is seriously different from 8.6/thousand. And yet, we are still talking about percentage of increase, here. That’s not good. The trend is still increasing.
