“Whirling Chaff”
From Psalm 83
Verse 13
O my God, make them like whirling dust,*
like chaff before the wind.
Reading the Lectionary readings for today I came across this verse in the very first reading. It brought a grin to my face.
Lent continues. The Lord sends me out in my car almost daily, in spite of my best laid plans. I struggle to keep my resolution not to call – not to even THINK – bad names at the fools on the road who cause disruption, chaos and pain. It helps to have a substitute in mind, so I have something I CAN say instead of just struggling NOT to say the words that immediately come to mind.
The above verse will do nicely – don’t you think?

Mrm, we choose a spiritual discipline as part of our Lenten sacrifice. Some people give up meat, or chocolate, or coffee – something that matters to them. Cursing at people, calling them names, even in my own car where they can’t hear me is something I believe is probably not good for my soul. It’s also very very difficult to give up something, and it makes me aware of how vulnerable I am to temptation.
Sigh.
I know, it sounds cuckoo. Cursing at other people even in the privacy of my own car is something I really don’t want to do, so I choose Lent to get started. I am not entirely successful.
SKUNK! Stop! Stop Skunk! You’re making me laugh. Stop! Stop! Now I can’t even call them chaffs without thinking of your comment.
