Sky Walk – I Couldn’t Do it

Today on Good Morning America, they hit the 3rd of America’s Seven Natural Wonders. It is the Grand Canyon, and they broadcast from the new skywalk that they built cantilevered out over the Canyon. It has a glass floor, and you walk out 4,000 feet above the bottom of the canyon.

I almost threw up.

Just looking at it makes my blood pressure jump; my heart is beating fast and my palms start to sweat.

I have a mild case of fear-of-heights. (Acrophobia) I feel unbalanced looking down, I feel like I could fall right over.

AdventureMan, thank God, has the same sensitivity, so he doesn’t tease me. I know we will visit this skywalk one day, and I wonder if he will be able to force himself to walk out on it. I already know I won’t be doing it. It’s just too stressful for me. . . . Even watching it on Good Morning America, I feel all stressed out!

  1. My friend is a afraid of height and bridges!
Yes bridges.. she walks with extra care on them… if you jump on a bridge while with her she will scream and may cry! so this is her worst dream! to walk on the Grand Canyon Bridge!

  6. My friend, I’m with you. Anything over about 5 stories is not fun. I once went to the Rainbow Room in NYC–it is at the top of a skyscraper. You take a glass elevator that faces out on NYC to go up. My back was plastered against the door and I shook the whole way up. Part of the reason why I won’t ski–can’t do the ski lifts!

  9. nQ – I have a post today on the first two – and a link where you can catch up if you miss one of the upcoming segments. šŸ™‚

    Kinano – It’s pretty daunting, isn’t it?

Momcat, they say most people won’t walk on the glass, only on the more solid parts, even though it is all perfectly walkable.

Lofter – LLLOOOLLLL! That’s what they say in all the movies, just before disaster hits! It’s perfectly safe!

    Snookie – No kidding? *shudders*

  12. That’s really something! I probably might check it out just to challenge myself, but I have the same feeling about heights as well. My legs feel weak already!

  14. Thanks, Lofter.

Big Pearls – maybe to you! I want to stay like fifty feet back from the edge!

    N. – I can feel the sweat starting and breath coming in short breaths!

You would, ShoSho? Honestly, you could do it with no problem?

  15. And of course, I can hardly wait to experience it! And yes, I’m also afraid of heights, but some things you just gotta do. Actually, I’ve been following this since it was first publicly suggested – its not a GC Nat’l Park facility, its on Hualaipai tribal land – very interesting story and highly controversial. Visitors’s website: http://www.grandcanyonskywalk.com/ – click on language button asap and go to gallery for photos. Also – pricey – you have to buy $29.95 tour, then add $29.95 Skybridge option to actually go out, so $60+ to scare yourself! Still…what a rush.

  17. I’d love to scare the daylights out of the tour guide. Just grin and look down then look him in the eye and tell him “I love you man, I really do.” Hug him then jump off backwards.

And cackle wildly when my chute opens, you think he’d pass out? Or have a insta-coronary?

  18. People who have never experienced agoraphobia, ŠÆ, can’t begin to imagine the horror of reading what you just wrote. My heart is pounding and I feel like I can’t breathe having read what you wrote. Heartless!
