No Fone No Fine?

From today’s Arab Times, a dilemma for police enforcing the new no-mobile-phone-use-while-driving-law:

Mobile-user leaves cops baffled; Porn decoder seller nabbed
KUWAITI CITY : Police are reportedly confused because they don’t know what to do with an Egyptian motorist, reports Al-Watan Arabic daily.

The man was talking on a cell phone while driving and when he discovered police were chasing him, he threw out the cell phone from the car window.

When police stopped him they failed to find the cell phone. The daily added the man might have realized that he would be fined KD 50 while his phone cost KD 15 and the sim card KD 5 so he decided to get rid of the phone.

  1. I like how the Arab Times reporter has spelled out the costs for any would-be fine violator: ditching the phone saves 30KD.

And I’m very interested to hear more about the “Porn decoder seller” πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚

  6. Yeh, I saw that one, too, and thought I would leave it out! Thanks, Little Diamond!

Is there somewhere in town that sells those “burner” phones, Hamitaf? My stateside one works better than all the expensive phones I have owned!

Ansam – it really is funny, isn’t it?

  7. *grins* You have to hand it to the guy for being able to stump the authorities..

as for the fine being “high”..I would suggest that in order to have people actually listen, the fines HAVE to be significant. Having said that, 50KD to many people in Kuwait really isn’t a lot. Not to the ones who do the majority of the law-breaking…not from what I saw while living there. I’m not sure if 100KD would be enough. Make it 1000KD with jailtime, no wasta possible, and you *might* have something…

  8. At first, when they announced the law would go into effect, they said the fine would be * * * 5KD!! Can you imagine??? People would just laugh and throw a 5KD bill. I am glad they raised the fine, and I am glad they really are enforcing it!

  9. This just shows the effect of competition on the local telecom market. Cheap lines, cheap phones – use and throw

  10. Mentabolism, I have this cheap burner phone that I use in the US – it cost $14.95 and it works great. I can leave it off for three – four months and when I turn it on again – it works!

Also, though, for the first time, my Kuwait phone is also working in the US – I am getting all the election texts etc. Zain must have some agreement with AT&T.
