Heavy Heart: Police Dog Auction

In today’s Kuwait Times is an ad from the Ministry of Interior offering “28 Trained Police Dogs” for Auction on June 3rd.

Everyone knows there are clandestine dog fights here, where animals are goaded to fight until deeply injured and killed. This is not a dog-friendly culture. Dogs starve here all the time, are hit, beaten, abandoned, stoned, maimed, tortured by children and adults.

The thought of who might buy these dogs and the purposes they might be put to makes my heart heavy. Worse. It makes my stomach heave.

Working dogs do what they are trained to do. The work hard. They served Kuwait! They deserve a good retirement.

  1. We shouldn’t even have dogs in this country seriously… we don’t deserve pets.

  4. Disturbed – I disagree. Many people, including Kuwaitis, in Kuwait have pets and treat them well. Kuwaitis are active in both the AWL and PAWS, thanks be to God. Sometimes it is the expats who abandon their animals to the streets – may they rot in hell.

3baid . . .I don’t mean to be critical. But sometimes, you are guilty if you say nothing, if you see something wrong and say nothing.

    Morning, Enigma!

  5. As much as I would like to find beauty in Kuwait (this is a reason I have been reading your blog for about 6 mos now), it is the knowledge of how cruel this place can be along with the reminders around us that make it very difficult to justify any good do I find. I believe the way a society treats its animals is a strong reflection on the society itself, and I am sad to say, I find little redemption in their behaviors.

  6. Perhaps instead of being critical, people should make a move to get together and attend the auction on June 3rd and buy those dogs.

Sure there are those who participate in dog fights, but there are also dog lovers in Kuwait and people who care about animals with connections to those who have resources to pay for them.

If enough people got together, something could be done to help some of those dogs.

  7. Welcome, Mimfoy, glad you checked in. I don’t know where you are from, but in the USA we seem to express our indifference and cruelty in other areas. Pardon my cynicism . . .

Jewaira – You are right, and what a good idea!
