“You are Looking A Little Different, Madame”

On a recent visit to Doha, I dropped in to say hello to my old tailor, who works in a tiny little shop in an obscure little area and does great work – in his own good time.

After exchanging greetings and asking about family members, etc. he looked at me and said “You are looking a little different, madame.”

I can see where this is going, and I try to head him off . .

“Yes, yes” I hurriedly reply, heading toward the door, “I am a couple years older, ha ha ha, it’s so nice seeing you!”

“Yes madame,” he says beaming at me, “You are a little bit FAT!”

“Bye!” I holler over my shoulder, as I grab AdventureMan and push him out the door; I can’t get out the door fast enough. NO! I am not fat! But who has a better eye than a tailor?

AdventureMan isn’t easy to push, especially when he is weak from laughing too hard. He is very kind to me for the rest of the day, knowing my feelings are fragile, and damaged.

  4. It depends on the tailor’s tone of voice when he said that and his overall expression. It could in some cases be taken as a compliment šŸ˜›

  5. I can’t help but imagine you running in slow motion with music in the background:

    “Don’t speak
    I know what you’re thinking
    I don’t need your reasons
Don’t tell me cause it hurts”

  8. 3baid – Intlxpatr needs exercise. I need to move around more. I think it will get better when I am in a cooler climate and can walk again. And you are right, QC loves me just the way I am.

Purg – he said “a little bit fat!” I am not FAT!

Enigma – I know this sounds funny, but I think he said it with approval. I think he thought it looked good on me. 😦

Jewaira – You are right – he meant it as a compliment. I could see it coming and I couldn’t get away fast enough!

3baid – yes! exactly! like in a nightmare!

Ansam – It’s nice that he has broad parameters!

    LoveStruckFlana – Thank you, sweetie!

  11. In some cultures, being fat means you are rich and beautiful..Places like Mauritania have wife fattening farms where girls are force fed to add a few pounds..corpulent = opulent

  12. speaking from experience, never in my life has my fat, fat ass been quite so admired as in Kuwait. I’m very sure he meant it as a compliment, don’t worry yourself ;b (by the by, in a very bedu neighborhood, apparently my bat wing granny arms are also considered a thing of beauty–it’s kinda hard to go wrong in these parts)

  13. Mentabolism – it wasn’t so long ago that was true also in America – being a little plump meant you had a little extra money – it was a status thing. Maybe 100 years ago!

LOL, Soupprincess, I think you are absolutely right. He was looking at me with admiration, but I still felt embarassed, and I wished my husband weren’t there because I knew he was dying laughing inside – it was truly comical!
