Here There and Everywhere

Antannae Garden

As we are zooming down the highway, my friend says to me “Have you noticed all the new antannae going up? It’s like a very strange garden crop.”

I hadn’t really noticed, but as soon as she said it, my antannae went up.

She was right. They are everywhere. Sometimes just one, sometimes two or three – new – all in the same place.

Her theory is that the Ministry of Communication is putting them up to monitor our phone calls and to eliminate the use of all the VOIP calls we are making.

I know there is a new mobil phone operator that has been authorized, so that these may be new mobil towers . . .

but that is all speculation. Does anyone know for sure what these new towers are, growing up almost overnight all over Kuwait?

  5. LLOOLL Chirp!

Bu Yousef, they truly are ugly. I love the ones that are thinly disguised as palm trees, but these need some disguising. Improving what network infrastructure? Telephone? Mobil phones? Cable? Satellite transmission?

  9. did you know that VOIP is legal in Qatar!?

  10. Ansam, I was living in Qatar when VOIP was made ILLEGAL. All the major embassies went together to the Amir in protest, saying it was a Quality of Living issue, and the Amir very graciously rescinded the decree, may God richly bless him.

Imagine – a country full of expatriates, sacrificing their lives, their time with their family, hoping to build a better future – they need to be able to talk with their families, it makes being away from their country and away from their families somehow more bearable.

I know it makes my 85 year old Mother happy to be able to call me when she wishes, at a local phone number. I know it makes my life easier, being able to make medical appointments from here and to talk to my banks and insurers, etc. Living without VOIP would be a “tipping point” issue for me and my husband.
