The Demise of Tanureen
As we were sitting outside, having one of our very best days in Kuwait, eating lunch at Tanureen, we got some very sad news. Our kind old Egyptian waiter told us there is a strong possibility Tanureen will close in May, the land may be used (sigh) for another mall. (Here’s the first review of Tanureen.)
What a great pity. We have enjoyed so many happy hours at Tanureen, so many good meals. It’s one of the treasures of Kuwait, only in Fehaheel.
Here is what we were eating, out in the breezy warm sunlight. Sorry that it is already half eaten by the time I got around to taking photos:

One of our funniest memories of going to Tanureen was taking Little Diamond, who asked the waiter how the Tanureen salad differed from the Garden Salad. “They are same-same” he replied. Little Diamond’s little eyebrows came together in a frown. “But one is priced at KD 1.500 and the other at KD 1.750?” she continued. “Same-Same!” said the waiter, this time with a little impatience. She ordered one, and we have always wondered what the difference REALLY is, if any.
The weather is perfect for dining out. Go quickly, before the heat sets in, before the Tanureen is no more.

loooooooooooooooooooool what memories. do you remember the hot lemon juice he brought when I asked for hot water with lemon? but the food was so, so good – I am very sorry to hear that it is closing.

I remember my first and last time in tanooreen…
It was during an eid of ….hmmmm
1994? 1995?
It was a long eid holiday. We still had our big extended family then, one of my aunt’s husbands decided to invite us all there enroute to their chalet. So every one goes. maybe 30 of us there sitting outside… i remember the food was good and we had so much fun.
Then i remember me, my dad and mom and baby sister went back to q8 while all the others continued to chalet to sleep. We went to take some arabian ice cream (Bootha) before we went home…
the next day, allllll of us (including those in chalet) had severe vomiting and dhaiarrea :S we were glad we were not in chalet and the eid was ruined…

By the way… do u know what tanooreen means?
In case you didn’t, its a name of a dhai3a -like a big farm, kansas style- in Lebanon. There is a famous lebanese singer (fairooz) who sang a song about catching a carriage ride from her own dai3a to tanooreen dai3a… one of my favourite songs…

Tanureen , means Two Ovens , Tanur plus Tanur = Tanureen
about getting sick , since the waiter is Egyptian it is no surprise
AdventureMan commented that “food sure looks a lot less appetizing when you photograph it half eaten.” LOL.

Jewaira – and all – DIRECTIONS: Exit 212 going to Gulf Road. Get on Gulf Road going toward Fehaheel. At the last stoplight (bigger mosque on right) maneuver to middle lane, cross and watch for Phillipine school on right. Take the first right after Phillipine school and you are there, Tanureen is on your left.
Danderma – oh NO! How awful! I am so sorry to hear your wonderful experience ended so badly! You think it was the ice cream?
Daggero – I think it’s because they bake their own bread, two kinds, saj and pocket.
Ah yes, what a great, discreet dating place. A Kuwaiti icon, really.
i know tanoorain = two tanoors = two ovens …
but why did they choose that name?

ooh and no it was defenitely from the restuarant, cause even the rest of the family in the chalet who did not have ice cream had the same infection :S

Danderma, LOL at :p and I am so sorry to hear you got so sick. I have a friend who thinks it must be bad eggs, but in your family’s case, it must have been something everyone ate – did you ever figure out what it was?

They called it Tanureen because they cant call it Tanoortain , because thats a big No NO , it means two skirts

We have gotten sick eating out here, occasionally, but even though we eat the same foods, we don’t get sick at the same time, so we never know what it is . . .
