Compulsory premarital tests

From today’s Kuwait Times

KUWAIT: The Ministry of Health is preparing a draft law to make premarital blood tests compulsory for Kuwaiti citizens. It plans to refer the draft law to the Cabinet’s Fatwa and Legislative Department, which will then review it and suggest necessary amendments, reported Al-Rai. An official said that the committee would follow the standard procedure before referring it to Dr Ibraheem Al-Abdalhadi, the Ministry of Health’s Undersecretary, who in turn will refer it to the Minister of Health Roudhan Al-Roudhan. It will adopt the law immediately after different aspects of the law are approved by the department.

Does not clarify what the pre-marital tests will test for. I assume HIV/Aids, STDs . . . but will it also test genetic incompatibility?

  1. This is more for genetic incompatibility than for STDs…

  2. I agree to what Bo Yousef had said, it seems more appropriate to test those genetic incompatibility due a large segment of the society still encourages marriages within the same family and mostly between first cousins.

I can’t wait for MPs reaction after F&L committee’s approval specially those members that descend from areas with residents who believe that a daughter ought to marry her cousin unless he frees her from such obligation.

    Better late than never.

  3. It kind of cracks me up. The report gives the whole bureaucratic journey of the legislation without telling us what the tests will test for.

I agree, testing for genetic problems will save a whole lot of heartache. It also seems to me that it is a great opportunity to insure that your future mate does not bring some unexpected and unpleasant surprise.

  4. The tests could be for genetic incompatibility. Although it wouldnt be such a bad idea to screen for STDs as well. Although it may not go down so well with the parents of the girl. I remember an incident where the girl’s dad insisted she was a virgin and therefore didn’t need to have a blood test done.
