Having Sisters Make People Happy

This is from todays BBC Health News; you can read the entire article by clicking on the blue type.

(Here’s to you, Sparkle and Big Diamond! I am so glad I have you for sisters!)

Sisters spread happiness while brothers breed distress, experts believe.

Researchers quizzed 571 people aged 17 to 25 about their lives and found those who grew up with sisters were more likely to be happy and balanced.

The Ulster University team said having daughters in a family made people more open and willing to discuss feelings.

They said the influence of girls was particularly important after distressing family events such as marital break-ups.

. . .

Lead researcher Professor Tony Cassidy said:”Sisters appear to encourage more open communication and cohesion in families.

“However, brothers seemed to have the alternative effect.

“Emotional expression is fundamental to good psychological health and having sisters promotes this in families.”

  1. If the whole having sisters thing is true it explains a lot about me. I am the oldest sibling sister of four brothers. Granted, most would say that I should be out of the house by now at age 25 – I’m working on it. But whenever I’m at my house – we have a lot of family issues right now – I feel so depressed and alone!

Maybe what I’ve been missing all along is a sister… Or maybe I should have invested more in my girl friends. I find that its hard to relate to women coming from a house full of boys.

  2. My mother of four (2 girls, 2 boys) always used to tell us, “When you were little, I wished you were all girls; but when you were teens I so desperately wished you were all boys!” My sister and I hugged and scrapped our way to adulthood, usually uniting in the face of a common “enemy” (our brothers). I could smack my sister, but no one else could even look at her funny. lol
I’m thankful for ‘Madam Sister’ and now it looks like I’ll live longer because of her.

  3. You Know, I don’t know you but when I read your comment I just wanted to reach through the computer and hug you. That’s what sisters – yes, and girlfriends – that’s what we do.

I am the oldest of three sisters, thanks be to God. Sisters have their problems, too, growing up, but as grownups, we do pretty well. But oh, I always wanted to have brothers. I loved playing cowboys and Indians (oops, umm, err .. . cowboys and First Nation Americans!) and I loved building things with tinker toys and building sets. I never had a lot of patience with girly things. YOU really know a lot about getting along with men, you have a great advantage in life.

But yeh, you really are going to have to find a couple of great gal pals who can help you laugh over the grosser inanities of life. Sending you hugs and kisses XXX OOOO XXXX

  9. I agree! I used to fight with my sisters a lot when we were young. We hated each other and fought like crazy. But now we’re the best of friends and I dont think I can live without them!

  10. And you have learned well, Daddy’s Girl! Very little intimidates YOU! πŸ™‚

πŸ™‚ Don Veto, that makes you very likely to be happy and balanced – is that true? No brothers? I thank God for my sisters, too.

This Lady – And no one knows you like a sister, right? God bless ’em!

  11. I’m quite happy with my two brothers (no sisters). I’m not sure how they feel, but I’m quite comfortable talking to them about any issue and they’ve always been supportive. They’re two strong individuals with heart of..marshmallows lol. And btw the sample of under600 people ages 17 to 25 doesnt even come close to accurately representing all the people with and without sisters :/ I’m never depending on BBC for research data again!

  12. Old Mrs. Pewter – I agree, it was more a survey than a true study. That is a very small base from which to draw conclusions.
