What Would You Take?
As I say farewell to all my current earthly possessions (I say current, because an entire other life has been in storage for the last 11 years, with all my European collection, early Tunis, early Amman, early Damascus – looking forward to retiring is kind of like heaven, I will be re-united with old friends, some of whom I’ve even forgotten. 🙂 ) which will be packed for the move to Doha, AdventureMan and I have a few things which we always take with us.
Of course, our first concern is the Qatteri Cat. He walks around crying as his environment changes daily, pieces disappear, rooms are re-arranged. He will go on the plane with us.
AdventureMan has a quilt, which takes almost one entire suitcase all by itself. His clothes, of course, his computers, and his camera equipment. He has already taken a suitcase full of my hobby gear down to Qatar, and it is waiting for me in his new office.
I will have my computer and Airport, my favorite clothes, my favorite shoes, my favorite jewelry, my small cameras – and my earring tree.

I think being mildly obsessive/compulsive doesn’t hurt me. I like order. Moving to a new place, being able to unpack my earring tree and place my earrings in careful order (stones together, gold together, pearls together, dangles together, etc.) gives me a small illusion of control over my environment.
I found this earring tree at the annual Street Fair at the University of Washington about 15 years ago – there were many larger, more glorious ones, and this one was on the sales table. It is made of oak, swivels on its base, is very finely made and has served me well all these years. It doesn’t even take up that much room in the suitcase, it is so flat.
If you knew that life, being what it is, is all about the unexpected, and if you knew you might never see most of your worldly goods again, what would you take with you? (Photos welcome :-), send to Intlxpatr@aol.com.)

I am very sad to be honest, I know Qatar is close by, but Intlxpatr leaving Kuwait – it just wont be the same.
You’ve been a great supporter of bloggers, Kuwaiti issues whether cultural, social or otherwise…
Hard to believe it was over three years ago we both blogged around the same time (plus our old friend Cyberrowdy – remember him?)
So much has changed, some for the worse, some for the better.
Wishing you the best but were all sad to be honest.
😦
probably a knife… or any sharp object… to keep me busy or safe? or just busy.
Thank you so much, Amer, and I imagine I will be lurking around and commenting on Q8 blogs still – I’ve gotten sorta hooked on Q8. 🙂 Plus – these are amazing times, transitional times, and I am eager to see where Kuwait is going . . .
Yes, many good bloggers have moved on. I miss Skunk! And Gastronomico (the guy who opened Slider Station) and Kinan. I am SO glad you’ve stayed in the game. 🙂
Disturbed – I wish you would try Sudoku. 😦
you shall be missed indeed.
I always mailed my sewing machine registered mail so it would be there when I got there. Some valuables I hand carried. Everything else was pretty much what I think I would need right away. Never had much sentimental attachment to most things. Just need my hubby, kids and whatever pets I had at the time. (I was more likely to carry the pets favorite food in my suitcase.)
Thanks, KTDP. I never miss one of your blog entries. 🙂 I don’t always comment, because I don’t want to intrude on all the energy, but I really enjoy reading what you write.
LOL, Momcat, I totally understand. And I am also carrying cat food, but also mail ordered some to the new location; it is there now, waiting! 🙂
Sorry, Daddy’s Girl. I am guessing you were commenting from your office computer, and it went to spam, I don’t know why . . . I found it there and rescued it!
Intlxpatr
They say kuwait grows on you , i wonder if thats True .
We will be waiting for your posts from your new post .
See you later , which begs the question whether you will go back to the states this summer after your move to Qatar .
Have a safe trip
It’s true, Daggero. 😉 Kueait grown on you. I haven’t made any travel plans yet, perhaps in September when it feels like the cool breezes of October will never come. 🙂 Kuwait and Qatar are SO different!
Hey there, just found out you are leaving.
I just gave your blog as a check point for someone that inquired food prices for Kuwait and I remembered your posts about it.
Yeah, Kuwait grows on one for sure. I find myself coming back to the Kuwait blogs, lurk around, comment, sometimes even miss that darn place 😉
We almost went back, but right now it doesn’t look like it. With a tad of Luck hubby will go to, guess where, Qatar 😉
But he’ll live on post, so no me going to Qatar, me sitting in Hungary and enjoying the green beautiful yard 😉
What I would take? I usually don’t take much. But for sure my currently ever growing bag of camera gear and a few good books to start with.
I’m easy to please 😉
Stay safe and I’, looking forward to read about Qatar 🙂
Mubarikya will never be the same again!
