Gross!
Our son asked how the baby pigeons are doing. They are doing fine. They are huge! Yesterday, I saw the largest one stretch his legs and take a couple steps!
I also know now how pigeons feed their babies. Pigeons are just gross, or at least these wild pigeons who have chosen my villa are gross. (I am sure that Bu Yousefs pedigreed pigeons are much more refined than these wild pigeons. 😉 ) They poop on my front porch. To feed their babies, they eat and then they come back and shake all over and make themselves throw up and the babies go wild and eat right out of their beaks.
I know, I know, it is all part of God’s perfect plan and nothing is gross . . . but it FEELS gross to me!
As we were entering the compound the other night, we saw one of the compound wild cats, young, skinny, and oh-so-proud, head high, carrying a pigeon almost as big as he/she was. You couldn’t help but laugh, even though the pigeon was sadly dead, but that cat was strutting! He/She knew he was going to have a great meal in just a minute, once he got that pigeon to a safe, secret place!

Wow, they’re not as cute as you would expect haha
No, they never were cute, Sp4rkster. If you see the yellow on the right one’s head, they were both covered with this sparse yellow sort of down, but they were never cute.
Everything is gross… It’s how you manage the loft that makes the difference. Mine is cleaned daily and washed (with disinfectant) every Friday.
The part with the feeding is a little more special that we give it credit. It may not look attractive, but these are the only birds that have a system of producing ‘pigeon milk’ to feed their young. It’s fascinating how it’s a similar to mammals but in the bird world.
Yikes. I am waiting for the young pigeons to fly, and then I will have the area cleaned out. I can’t access the area; it will take a ladder. I had never heard of pigeon milk, Bu Yousef. That is fascinating!

Glad to discover your blog. I have the same problem with pigeons at my compound, they do create a lot of mess. And the commentary of pigeon milk is indeed fascinating. I will closely scrutinize those little babies now !
Bunga – Our compound suggested taking out the light in our entry, and it was like magic – without the center light to hang on/sleep on, they weren’t so interested. Also, once the little pigeons were flying, we discouraged them staying with noise and water spray. Now – no problem. We still have pigeons – the way the villa is built encourages them – but not where they bother us.
