Ramadan starts August 22
From today’s Gulf Times
Ramadan likely from August 22
Ramadan is expected to start on August 22, says Doha’s Arrayah daily quoting a statement issued by Abu Dhabi-based Islamic Project for Moon Sighting. Arrayah says that people in Central Asia and North Africa and in the northern parts of the US would be able to sight the moon with their naked eyes on August 21.
You might wonder why non-Muslim expats living in Qatar would care when Ramadan starts. There are multiple reasons, like not wanting to get arrested for drinking water in public, or eating, or chewing gum, or touching your mate, all of which could get you a fine or even arrested.
Another reason is that the Qatar Distribution Center (otherwise known as The Liquor Store, yes, there is only one in all of Qatar) closes for the entire month, so in the next few days, things are going to get mighty crowded at the Liquor Store, lol)

What is the ID proof the shop requires to sell to Customers and Do they sell to the Qataries or Arabs ???
People have to have paperwork done which gives them written permission to have a liquor card. There is a minimum salary requirement, and you cannot be Moslem. You are allocated a monthly amount (very generous) depending on your salary. The Distribution Center is run by Qatar Airways.
Most of the wines are adequate; the majority seem to be South African or Chilean. I think maybe the Embassies and hotels get first pick, and we get what is left over. They have Corona, and some beer my husband has never heard of. It’s nice to have a glass of red wine with Italian food, but for me, most of it is what I think of as cooking quality, not a moving experience.
BTW, Moslems convicted of drinking in Qatar are receiving 40 lashes. No, I am not kidding.
of drinks and whips ;
From the early days of the Iranian revolution they banned drinking and Once they caught one guy drunk ,they asked him why are you drinking ?? He replied because I Have permission , The revolutionary guard said From whom you got the permission to drink , the Drunk replied I have permission from my Butt because it is the one that is going to get whipped
LLLLOOOOOLLLLLL, Daggero!
There are some Christian denominations and sects which also forbid alcohol. I have never understood it because Christ’s very first miracle was turning water to wine at a wedding. Many verses in the Bible speak of the evils of excess – in anything, including love of money, but stresses all things are allowable, in moderation; Christ declared all foods clean. He said it is not what you put into your body, but what comes out – words from your mouth, bad thoughts from your mind, evils of the heart – those, that are evil.
Lashing is a formidable deterrent to alcohol, in my book.
