My Newest Friends

Welcome! Welcome!

We ordered the washer and dryer almost a month ago, but because of a huge energy star promotion, there was a backlog, and it took forever to get them.

In the meantime, our household goods from storage – 12 years of storage – arrived, and almost everything we are keeping needs to be cleaned.

We had two old featherbeds from the former East Germany that had a little mildew on them. I almost threw them away, but I thought since I am going to throw them away, I might as well see if they could be saved. I put them in (one at a time; they are each too big to be put in together) on a cycle called “sanitize” and then dried them on high and . . . they came out perfect! Wooo HOOOO!

As you can see, even though I have done many loads, I still have a ways to go:

No, not the brass pot; it is not going in the washer. It needs to have a handle put back on, so it is waiting there with other low-priority projects for me to get around to it. 🙂 Isn’t this a great laundry room?

  1. I am in awe of your utility room! Not that I’m a big fan of doing laundry, but if you’ve got to do it anyway, what a HUGE, bright space for it!

  2. Great laundry room and you’ll love your large capacity front loaders. Great for large quilts!

  3. LOL, Grammy, doing laundry is also not my favorite thing, but when you have a bright, sunny space to fold, it takes some of the sting out of it. Also, the washer really extracts a lot, so the clothes feel almost dry as they go into the dryer, woo HOO!

I had a front loader in Germany, MomCat, and became a great fan. I didn’t even have a dryer, just used a couple drying racks. Kept my utility bill way down 🙂 But for the big quilts, I used to have to go to a pay laundry. Now . . . you are right. I can wash them, gently, here. 😀

  4. One of my favorite things is to do the laundry during the vacation .

I love those big American washing machines and i love the different detergents you can buy to go with them. The strangest detergent i came across is the one used to wash tennis shoes or sneakers in the washing machine ! I alaways thought that dirty shoes will dirty up the washing machine !!!!

It was a sad day when they announced the demise of Maytag last year .

whats the name of the brand you got ???

  5. Daggero, these are Kenmore. I use Consumer Reports – they tell me what the machines are that you get the best bang for the buck. These are ‘energy star’ machines that save you money as you use them, using less water, less electricity, etc.

What I love is that the washer really wrings the clothing dry. It also heats its own water, so it can get very hot, when you need very hot water. The dryer is most expensive, but you use it less because the clothes are already greatly dried . . .

But you can only use special detergents, those labeled “HE” for high efficiency. Haven’t tried the sneakers, but I washed two German featherbeds and they came out beautifully!
