Hurricane Preparations: Isaac
As we were out last night, we saw this gathering of trucks. They are not Gulf Power trucks, or at least they don’t say Gulf Power, but they sure look like trucks pre-positioned to take care of wind-driven electrical outaages. It’s very reassuring.
The weather is very warm – lows in the high 70’s, highs in the low 80’s – and the air is drenched with humidity. An electrical outage is hard on an Alaska girl like me, who hates stale warm air. It’s also hard because this weather is ideal for mosquito breeding, and mosquitos head my way when given any access. Let’s keep the electricity flowing and the air conditioning running!

I always like this sight. You know the awful winter wind storms we occasionally have with the resulting extended power outages. We get trucks like this from as far away as Utah and Idaho. We often see the workers taking a break for a meal at the local grocery store that has a food court and speak to them-thanking them for being willing to leave their homes and families and come to work 18 hours on 8 hours off until our power problems are resolved. More unsung heroes in my mind. Glad the worst has bypassed you–you have been in my thoughts and prayers often.
Thank you, Momcat. I totally agree, they are heroes. I think the same of cops and emergency medical technicians, the military and national guard who go and help in emergencies, doing really hard grunge work, and volunteers, like the Red Cross workers who set up and run shelters.
