New Yorker: What a Public Execution Looks Like

Excellent article in The New Yorker: What A Public Execution Looks Like
Only the most barbaric countries in the world offer death as a public spectacle. A public execution disgraces the country that offers it up. Only a bonehead would suggest it. Such is the leadership under which we currently suffer.
These countries celebrate their “law and order,” but their laws protect the rich and powerful, who escape prosecution, and are used to bring oppression and injustice to those who are not part of the elite. They use fear and intimidation; they use the “justice” system to intimidate their perceived enemies.
In a civilized country, citizens and lawmakers create laws for the “greater good.” The law applies to all citizens from top to bottom. Citizens obey the laws because they believe the laws are just; they receive due process when they do not.
A public execution rights nothing. It disgraces the executioner. It would stain our national soul.
