Better Faster Smarter Solution
My husband jokes that when I have a sore throat, it is the beginning of a common cold, but when he has a sore throat, it is a rare tropical disease and he should be babied and coddled and have tea and soup brought to him, and warm washcloths, and we should speak in sweet soft voices in case he is breathing his last.
Last night I had a tickle. My husband, God bless him, knows that what makes me all better is miso soup, so I had miso soup for dinner last night.
Today, I think I have the rare tropical disease kind of sore throat. It was just a tickle yesterday, but by night I was in the grips of a no-kidding, no sleeping sore throat and stuffed nose, coughing, and feeling rotten. I feel like something the Qatteri Cat dragged in.
I rarely get sick. I don’t have time to get sick now. Please, dear readers, share your top “get rid of a cold” solutions, and do it NOW! I need your help!

awww hope you get well soon expat.
i also rarely get sick, but i do get ill atleast once a year, and if i skip a year it’ll come back with a real vengance.
the best thing i find, cos like your husband i get the rare tropical disease 😛 , is knock back half a bottle of cough syrup and get it to knock me out for a day or two. keep drinking to keep you asleep 😛
sounds silly, but only rest and sleep will get you better so knocking yourself out is the best way to sleep it off 😛
then again i’m not exactly a doctor 😛
oh I hate a sore throat! for me its always followed by a flu of some kind.
my best solution would be 2 tabs of panadol cold & flu every 6 hours, strepsils and vitamin C in the morning.. and in some cases I use zyrtec (good for allergies).
I hope You get better soon 🙂
Squeeze some lemons in a glass, then add some salt and swallow quickly, do not add water. It works every time, try it more than once or drink a big glass.
Hope u get better soon.
Skunk – dying laughing. I take so little medication of any kind that one teaspoon of cough syrup would knock me out. I agree with you, giving in, sleeping it off is about the best you can do.
Life – Oh! You are right! I forgot about Strepsils, and they really work great on sore throats. And I love the Vitamin C. . . good tips, all.
Elijah – sweetie, will you come over and squeeze those lemons for me?? I bet it does work, straight vitamin C and salt, like totally clearing the throat.
Thank you all, I am feeling much better today. I sound worse; it has gone to my chest, but once it is out of my head and throat I feel better.
My mother always had us gargle with salt water. Is this a family thing, or just an us thing?
I take lots of vitamin c pills and mix them with a warm dose of indulgent self pity :-). the latter doesn’t really speed things along, but it does make me feel better!
Panadol Cold & Flue does miracles! Also, lots of soup.
Hope you get better soon 🙂
Little Diamond – Dad used to gargle with salt water, but I don’t think we kids ever did. The very thought, pardon me, makes me gag!
Kinan, thanks for the good wishes. I really am feeling better, and yep, soup, and the Christmas Punch with cranberry juice and pineapple juice . . . it might be the vitamin C, or it might be the emotional power, I don’t know, but it seems to help!
