Kuwait imposes fee on public toilets?

LOL – there are public toilets in Kuwait? Where? Women always memorize which buildings have public restrooms, but aren’t those owned by the buildings? And holy smokes, what do we do if we don’t have small change left after all our shopping??? Men are more . . . umm. . . err. . . flexible, but women need privacy, i.e. restrooms!

TRAIN your cleaners! Give them proper supplies! Hold their supervisors responsible for their inspection and maintenance of standards! This is called ACCOUNTABILITY.

Charging for use of public restrooms will impose, at the very least, inconvenience for women, and most likely, embarrassment for those who don’t have the money, at the very worst times, like when you have seven children with you and three of them need to use the toilets. Charging fees for usage? Bad idea.

Municipality to impose fees on public toilets
Staff Writer From this morning’s Al Watan

KUWAIT: Kuwait is seriously mulling over the notion of imposing nominal fees for using public toilets.

Mohammad AlΩ€Amri, the Convener of the Cleansing Committee at Kuwait Municipality, stated that the fee is aimed at providing better sanitary services along the lines that are implemented in certain neighboring countries. The official also noted that the current cleaning contracts are scheduled to expire in November 2010.

In a related development, the outgoing Minister of State for Municipal Affairs and Minister of Public Works Dr Fadhil Safar disclosed that Kuwait Municipality is currently working on a proposal to implement a new mechanism in keeping track with the performance of cleaning companies to ensure that the garbage is disposed off at the assigned dumpsites. He added that the system has been already implemented in the Kuwait City Governorate and is expected to be applied in all other governorates soon.

  1. Has anyone ever BEEN in a public toilet in Kuwait? Why would ANYONE be willing to pay money to get INTO one?

  2. LOL, Desert Girl, I think you have to be pretty desperate. Actually, I have found a few fairly reliable clean restrooms in Kuwait (we treasure them like gold!) but I think they are privately maintained, as they are in commercial buildings. Idon’t know that I have found a public restroom; I don’t even know where one would be!

  3. Pay???? For what?!??!?

and we are already kinda paying to use the bathrooms in malls… if u go to check your clothes or something you see that poor poor cleaner woman who is condemed to spend her life and her youth sitting in a filthy chair confined inside the bathroom to clean them, surrouneded by chemicals… and you can’t help but spare some change for her 😦

Instead of charging for money they should find a better way to treat the cleaners!!! It wrenches my heart to see that scene… only in Q8!!!

  6. You are right, Danderma, and I also always carry a little something for those poor women. And they have NO supplies, many times, with which to clean or to supply the toilets or to dry hands . . . so the customer abuses THEM, when it is the management who is not meeting the standards. Or do they set standards? Do they write job descriptions?

LOL, Bu Yousef. Wasn’t even my title – directly from the news source

  9. Amer – That is just sad. Like where are they supposed to go? And when they do, people say “look at them, just like animals” as if they had a choice.

Daggero – LOL, no no no, it is not a question, sometimes it is an exclamation mark! It is an imperative!

  10. I will be visiting kuwait soon. How are the public and household toilets in Kuwait? i mean squat loo or western style toilets.

    Nahin's avatar Comment by Nahin | August 27, 2013 | Reply

    • Nahin, they run the gamut. Many places – malls, hotels, restaurants – have modern sit toilets. You can be surprised, though, and some modern places will also have the squat toilets.

One surprise for women – the floors are always soaking wet because toileting habits differ. Westerners use paper to wipe, Gulf customs is to wash with water.

There are almost always places to wash your hands πŸ™‚
