A Night at The Garden
A local well known (here they say “reputed” and I always think it strange, because if we say ‘reputed’ it implies that it may not be true, but here it is meant to say well-known and respected) restaurant, The Garden, is having a month long Indian food festival. It has Indian food year round, but during this month some specialities are introduced, different areas highlighted, etc.

I like this place because my niece, Little Diamond, likes Indian food a lot, and it is a good place to take her. They have a separate restaurant downstairs, purely vegetarian, and another restaurant upstairs that also serves meat.
We went to the purely veg one on Thursday night, and decided to try the buffet. The food was delicious. One curry was so complex that we agreed, adding meat to it would have added NOTHING! It was so tasty without it.
The chef was making little crepe-like pancakes that you can roll food in, and then these little “paniera” made with the same dough, only with chives and savory flavorings in them:

This is what they look like up close:

The Garden is located at the corner of Al Rayyan and Kharabaa (also called Old Electricity Street). If you haven’t been in that area for a while, take your hard hat. A lot of the buildings are being bulldozed. I cannot imagine what the street will be like without Bombay Silk and Qatar Studios, but I see several stores have already disappeared.

yum! and don’t you mean “my reputed niece, Little Diamond” :D?
LLLOOOLLLL – or my “ill reputed niece?”
brought out a huge smile on my face, the pics! never thought i would be looking at these on your blog!! (shudve known better ofcourse!) Well these are the typical south indian delicacies, we call it the ‘paniyarams’, which even we dont get to taste! Goes well with some spicy tangy ‘chutneys’!!
Oh Onlooker, you don’t know! We love Indian food, and I have acquired a taste for the lemon pickles and all the chutneys. 🙂 I also am hideously addicted to Indian fabrics – the silks, the cottons, the saris – one minute I am looking, and the next minute I am at the cash register with an armload of fabrics . . . wondering how did this happen? ? ?
That looks sooooo good! I’m now trying desperately to locate the best Indian restaurants at any of our potential destinations on our August trip to Spain… Beijing, Shanghai, Amsterdam & Madrid are the possibilities. I hope I can find something to satiate these cravings!
On another note, after another wave of Internet censorship here in China, I have finally caved and purchased a personal VPN service. I am now surfing from wordpress blog to blogspot blog to Facebook to YouTube happy as a clam.
looool I prefer “a woman of a certain repute” 😀
lemon pickles!!! 🙂 try the mango pickles, my pick anyday! guess the fabric does things to you! Should make a visit! am enjoying the summer vacation at home town. and yes thanks to some gentle but disapproving comments on my irregular blogging have put up something! 🙂
Wooo HOOO, GlobalGal, working around the censorship issue! I tried to access a music spot sent by a friend, and it is blocked in Qatar! I hope you find a great Indian restaurant in every city you visit!
LittleDiamond – LLOOLL
Onlooker – I wanted to try lemon pickles after reading “The God of Small Things” and it took me a while to get used to the taste, but now I really like it. No disapproval from me – just gentle hints! Loved your entry!
hi
checkout Garden Hyderabadi… Much better… part of the same chain of restaurants… do remember to ask them about the spice factor.. some of their stuff is very spicy…
Hello, Qatarfoodie, welcome back. So where is the Garden Hyderabadi? I had no idea there are so many Garden outlets – I saw one in The Mall recently, and one at Le Mirage residences. (I LIKE spicy foods!) Do you have any other recommendations for places to take my vegetarian niece? And – are you currently in Qatar? Have you tried the Noodle House at City Centre? I love that place!
Yummy ! i used to have these in college. They go great with mint chutney or coconut chutney.
Guys were lining up for four / five at a time! I tried one, found it a little doughy for my taste, and went back to the very spicy stews. Yummmm!

Nice to see someone who really knows their subject. Good work on this.
