Mixed Message: Doha Dressing

With all the advisories going out, to both men and women but seemingly especially pointed at women, telling us to cover up, and be respectful of local culture and traditions, and especially not to dress disturbingly during Ramadan, I had to smile today in the mall (no not The Mall, another mall) when I saw these darling dresses in the window. OK, so we buy the dresses – who could resist? WHERE can we wear these dresses?

(They really are adorable dresses, and the Ramadan sales are already cranking up, Wooo HOOOO!)

  2. I’ve always wondered the same thing even in Kuwait. Where could they be worn by Muslim women? Every time I hear about the conservative dressing requirement for women it’s usually in the context of “in public.” But, what’s public? One would think they could wear whatever they chose in their own home. But what if they are hosting guests? What if they are guests of another family?

BTW – I’ve also always been amazed at the usage of the more “anatomically correct” manikens…especially in the store front windows!

  3. LLOOLL, Ansam, yes it is! 😀

LLOOLL, Bit Jockey, not just Moslem women, Western women can’t wear them in public either, or we are not supposed to, not supposed to show all that flesh! But do you think maybe in the puritanical USA that ni%%les are forbidden? You never see them on a maniken in the US. Do you think there is a law, or is it our custom/ tradition?

  4. LooL ur supposed to wear them in the privacy of four walls to please ur husband or in the presence of all female company to make them jealous…

the thing is… why is the store name Dandara?! Dandara means hmmm mumbo jumbo… in a bad way, more like nagging gossip… so there its for those days when u have nothing better to do than sit around bowlfuls of salted seeds and nuts and drink from ur coffee and tea flasks and chat nonsense 😀

  5. LLLOOOLLLL, no kidding, Danderma! Actually, I took the photo because I thought it was YOUR name and I wanted to send it to you, and then when I saw that it totally wasn’t, I made up the other blog entry.

I had no idea what Dandara meant – so it is sort of like idle gossip? Well, I bet these cheeky little dresses would set the tongues wagging! But oh, they are such sweet dresses, each a little honey! Bare, comfortable, adorable – but not for out of the house, unless you are abaya’d. Hmmm . .. make my husband jealous? Hmmmm. . . . 😀

Many thanks for adding a new dimension to an otherwise trivial entry – I learned something. The blessing of the blog, and thank you very much. 🙂

  7. I understand what you are saying Danderma, but I would so much rather have them all on my side – instead of jealous! Jealous women will try to undercut you, say mean things about you. Women who like you will stand with you through the hard times. Wouldn’t you rather they adore you than be jealous of you?
