Chinese Parents Abort Females; Men Can’t Find Mates

There is a part of me that thinks “What were you thinking??”

Of course, you know by now if you’ve been reading Here There and Everywhere that I don’t hate men, and also that I see RED when women are undervalued because they are women and not men. Equal rights, equal pay for equal work, equal citizenship – my battles to fight.

So what happens when poor people are told they can have only one child, and they all abort their female children – or they disappear shortly after birth – and only little boys who can grow up to take care of their parents are born?

Dearth of Women to Leave 24M Chinese Men Unwed

(Jan. 11) — More than 24 million Chinese men of marrying age could find themselves without a woman to wed by 2020, and a Chinese proclivity to abort female fetuses is a major contributing factor, a major study has found.

Gender imbalance among newborns is the most serious demographic problem facing the country’s population of 1.3 billion, the study by the government-backed Chinese Academy of Social Sciences says.

“Sex-specific abortions remained extremely commonplace,” the academy said, “especially in rural areas,” where the cultural preference for boys over girls is strongest.

  1. they are an oppressed society…and as much as i *heart* the idea of big brother, no one has the right to dictate how many children a couple may have in their family. + stupid arabs used to do this as well, until the prophet forbade the killing of female offspring by command of god.

  2. Men have been getting rid of inconvenient women forever – it’s just getting harder with people paying more attention. I think there are still women who disappear every year, or have “accidents”, but people used to say “Mind your own business” and now they are getting involved and checking stories out and talking to police when they have suspicions.

Children still disappear – more girls than boys, but boys, too. It’s not China, it’s not the Arab world – many cultures undervalue women. I just love it when suddenly people wonder where all the little girls are . . . and policy is going to change because of the great “Aha!” . . . girls are important, too.

LOL, Mrm, I just had a hilarious thought. You know the prophet Mohammed is said to have said polygamy is OK (IF you treat each wife equally, LOL) when there are so many extra women after warfare; maybe in his humanity, he would say the same when there are so many men and so few women, that women could take more than one husband?

But women are so smart – what woman would willingly take on dealing with TWO husbands???

  3. All actions have consequences. Single child policy was not excluded. I think the problem was that the policy makers thought human beings could overpower God.

    Sad.

Well, I do have two husbands though. One is working in Kuwait; another one is vacuuming the floor – iRobot. 🙂

  8. This has been going on for decades. And actually it happens more in the cities and in rural areas, there are whol;e cites which are virtually male. They kidnap women from the countryside and forcefully ”marry” them and then they are pushed to get pregnant. Of course if it is a girl they will abort the girl or throw it in the street to die (I have seen several photos with dead baby-girls in the gutter and people walking by and ignoring the little body)until she has produced an ”heir”.

Serve’s them right. Keep on aborting all girls and in 30 years there will be no overpopulation in China because there are only old men there.

  11. You all know this story is exaggerated.

Just like all other myths floating around the media.

Chinese people do not prefer boys over girls.
If they did it would not be because they are Chinese, it would be for other reasons.

  12. Daggero – who is next door and has small feet???

I am guessing that there are an abundance of single women in the world, but according to the article, most of the abundance of guys live in rural – poor – China and will never have an opportunity to meet the abundant women. Pity!

Name – I think the story is based on statistics. It mentions the one child policy, which was a fact, and the preference for boys based on economics – needing a child who can help them when they grow old. I also think there is a lesson for any nationality who prefers sons over daughters – any nation can end up with a similar imbalance.

  13. Tragic thinking that boys are better than girls. Hopefully, someday this sort of mentality will change and people will realize the benefits of both sexes.

  14. Li, I am guessing that the results of those preferences are making for some sorry circumstances now. 🙂
