The Bird Man
At Kailua Beach Park, people are enjoying the last minutes of daylight before the sun sets and it’s time to get ready for the upcoming week. This has got to be one of the most laid-bak places on earth.
We see a man who has birds everywhere. Clearly, the birds know him, they are flocking to him. He has some kind of food for them, and they sit on his arms, they sit on his head, they love this guy!
The locals know him, and these little boys brought him a sick bird to take home to heal.
Back at home, the light dims and a full moon rises. Life doesn’t get any sweeter.
Our flight back is late in the day. We spend the morning walking the beach, down to the Marine Base, past the Obama house, the waves are high and eating away at the beach. We pack, we drink more coffee. I’ve only shown you the fun day trips, but the meat of this trip, the finest part of this trip has been the conversations, the laughter, and the deepening of a life-long friendship.
I no longer have negative feelings about Hawaii. π We hit the local drugstore to pick up some great Kona coffee and bags of Japanese rice crackers in a million varieties, which we love. It’s been a great trip.
May I ask what the negative feelings toward Hawaii were? I was there two years ago and absolutely loved it although very expensive and slightly unfriendly. Sending you appreciation for these lovely pictures
My first time I was in Honolulu, and found it hot and humid and oppressive (climate). Kailua was a whole different experience, a constant breeze, humidity without stuffiness (being there in February was just great) and being with my friend probably colored everything rosier π
What great photos. Very heart warming.
I am dying to do Hawaii even though I am not a serf myself π – think you get the idea. When is the best time of year to go visit?
I knew that was you! I knew it!
I have an aversion to heat and sweat, so February was perfect for me. It was warm, but with lots of breezes, even some short rains. It was comfortable. We slept with windows and doors open, listening to the surf. BTW, I learned to surf in Hawaii, a long long time ago. It’s never too late π You might thoroughly enjoy the trying π
There are never “few” tourists, but February was not crowded. You might want to rent a car, and a small bungalow somewhere outside Honolulu. We loved the Kailua area, and there are others. Just get AWAY from Waikiki and all that craziness that is not the real Hawaii. π
Very good article! We will be linking to this great content on our site. Click http://s.intmainreturn0.com/bayy091615
Aloha from Kailua, I just found your blog today and wanted to say thanks for sharing this. It was great to see these candid pics as I continue to care for the birds at Kailua Beach Park. Mahalo!
Welcome! I am honored to have you here π I loved that not only did the birds trust you so, but also that you were so kind to the young boys who brought you the sick bird, and trusted that you would take it and do your best to heal it. Bless the work of your hands π
