Baked Apples – So Simple, So Good!
Cold weather is the perfect time for baked apples. Apples are good for you, cinnamon is good for you, the smell as they are cooking is divine, and the heat from the oven is welcome in these cold winter evenings. π
I slice a little bit off the bottom for the apples, so they will sit flat in the dish – not too much, just a little:
Use a knife to take out a cone from the core, then use a melon-ball maker to scoop the seeds out of the center of the apple. Don’t go through the bottom if you can help it. If you do, it’s not a big deal, but try not to.
Mix up about a cup of brown sugar with about 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon and some small pieces of real butter – you can use a fork to break the butter up and mix it into the sugar. It doesn’t have to be well mixed, some lumps are OK, you just want small pieces of butter.
Stuff apples with cinnamon butter, pack firmly into each apple cavity, and top with a small pat of butter:
Bake at 180 degrees C. or 350 degrees F. for 50 minutes.
This is how they look coming out of the oven:
Put each apple into a bowl, spoon sauce over apple, then top with a big dab of whipped cream:

This whipped cream is whipped with confectioner’s (powdered) sugar and a drop of vanilla flavoring. YummmmmY!

I love the idea!!! I shall do this tonight but is it okay not to let it in the oven for 50 mns? I like little freshness left in the apple =D
Hmmmm, yeh, they could have a little more firmness. π Traditionally, they are cooked to death, but not quite so mushy might be good, too! Make lots! They are irresistable!
My mom always made these with granny smith or some other firmer/tarter pie apples–they don’t get as mushy and they have a nice tartness.
Looks very good:) I usually do it different !
Will deff. try your way, seems easier !
Momcat – these are French Gala apples – they have little stickers that say “Le Crunch!” that always make me smile.
Badrah – there are more complicated recipes – some people include chopped pecans, or raisins, and some make a more complicated sauce. This is the simple but good way. What do you use in yours?
yummy! that does look good!!!!
so tell me….. when exactly are u planning on inviting some bloggers to witness a live preparation of one of ur famous stats powering recipes???? π
So Fonzy, when are we going to dance at your wedding?? π
Yummy Yumm..loooks really nice!

Lovely! To tell you the truth, I’ve never tried baked apples (I’m a pastry-lover who only asspciates apples with PIE!) This does light something up in my head though… the ingredients are much like apple pie, only without the butter-rich pastry! A Lower-Fat Apple Pie! Thanks for the recipe will definately try it out…
P.S. my recipes are easier to read now π
Thanks Amu – even YOU could do these. π
Fonzy – oh, now you’ve really done it! When you say something like that, you are married in NO time!
Machelle – You made the font size bigger? YaYYYYYYY!
Oh & The Baked Apple Recipe Includes Honey, Almonds, toasted walnuts, raisins, orange zest, brown sugar, powdered cinnamon, and nutmeg.
Yummy indeed! My mother was just telling me about how she misses the baked apples that her mother used to make when she was a child and I was miffed that she never made them for us, because it sounded so good! I will make these to go along with your New Orleans MACHBOOS recipe you so kindly shared too π
Who needs recipe books!
Harmonie, there are many better cooks than me, but I am armed with a few very good recipes! I look for fairly simple preparations, things anyone can do well.
actually no… we broke up π
Fonz, actually, breaking up is often a turning point. Breaking up doesn’t mean forever, sometimes it means evaluating where it is going to end up. Sometimes breaking up is actually a beginning. π
Or . . not!
thats an odd looking apple killing knife π
and a late happy new year π
The “apple killing knife” is a melon baller, Skunk! Hey, good to see you back again. Hope you had a GREAT time on your vacation.
