Favoring Co-ed Schools

Fascinating defense of integrated classrooms in today’s Arab Times, entitled Students Will Be Made More Comfortable under Co-ed written by Kuwait University student Dalal Nasser Al-Otaibi.

I learned how American Universities became co-ed, and why. (I had no idea; you grow up thinking these things are a given.) This article must have been used as a paper for a class, as it is well documented, cites sources, etc.

  6. Kaileena, no kidding! Tell her she got a lot of interest from this blog, would you? Is that AUK?

Vixenfatale – Me too. It may be less comfortable sometimes, but it forces us to learn to live together, takes away a lot of the fear factor.

Error – LLLOOOLLLLLL! You always raise the most interesting points. I think there IS a job market in Kuwait, but the hours are so much longer in the private sector, and the days off so much less that most Kuwaitis – I think – prefer working in the public sector to get the time off.

Bored – I think there are people who would like to roll back women’s participation in society in every country! People who would prefer women not go to school at all!

  7. I prefer co-ed education also, its not really that uncomfortable at all, we both create a balance for each other.

  8. Chirp – there have been times I have found the male students intimidating. They are always so sure they are right, for one thing, and so aggressive. I had to learn to stand up for myself. I think that CAN be uncomfortable. (And I’m glad I learned!)

  9. I have it on exceptionally sound authority they are making all state schools in Kuwait co-ed, beginning next semester.
Parents who are averse to this idea are being advised to migrate to Saudi.

  10. Is that you, BL?

That is the craziest rumor I have ever heard. It would be just too astonishing. I think there has to be a choice for the conservative parents, somewhere to send their children, but it’s good for all the parents to have a choice, co-ed or not.

  11. I agree with Dalal Nasser Al Otaibi, AMAZING ARTICLE! I believe that if people took the time to read such articles they will change their minds about co-ed. Very well written, I respect this kuwaiti girl!

  12. WELCOME, Q8ROX. I think it is simple. If we want to learn to get along, we have to have contact with one another. That goes for men and women, too, as we share the workplace. When people are separate, institutions become unequal – like health care, like education.
