Big Statistics Change

Two months ago, one of my regular readers Elementary Teacher who has a fascinating blog about teaching elementary school in a Middle Eastern country, wrote to me and told me that when I set up my blog page, I forgot to add back in the widget for Meta, which contained the RSS feed.

The truth is, I still don’t know entirely what that means, but I did as she suggested, and added the Meta back in.

And watched as my visitors nearly doubled overnight.

Who knew?

There is so much I am still learning, and I thank all of you who write to be, back channels, and give me hints. Thank you, especially, Elementary Teacher for your kindness in sharing such good information. I really enjoy reading your blog!

  1. you just took the widget and placed it on the sidebar? should I write something in it? I don’t get it 🙂

  2. In WordPress, there is this widget called Meta, and it needs to be in your columns so that you can log in easily, and so that other people can subscribe to your “feed.”

There are smarter, more technically oriented people who can explain a feed to you – I am a tool user, and more interested in writing than in the mechanics, which is why it took someone else explaining it to me. Once people can subscribe to your feed, they check in more regularly, so you get more visitors.

  5. Your blog is beautiful, though, Fonzy, especially after the makeover! WOW. And you are so good at getting conversations going with the topics you throw out. Yours is one of the blogs I make it a point to visit regularly – as you know!

  6. Dear Intlxpatr,

Wow, thank you for this nice comment about me!

For any of you who have a main page on Yahoo or Google, you can have blogs appear just like news blocks, with the titles of new blog articles coming up just like news articles whenever they are published. This saves you having to go to the blog to check if there are any new articles, only to have to be disappointed. It’s time-consuming.

If you add the Meta Widget to your sidebar (I recommend at the top), people can click on “RSS” (I don’t know what the letters stand for). Then that takes them to a page where they are asked, “Do you want to add this content to your main page?” All they have to do is click yes. Then, in order to see your blog content, all they have to do is go to their own main page, where your blog content appears. They don’t even have to take the time to GO to your blog. If they see an article title that interests them, they can just click on it directly.

If I didn’t have all the blogs I like on my main page, I would NEVER be able to follow the 150-200 that I follow now. Sometimes I have to delete things from my main page, as the maximum Yahoo allows is 200 (probably a good thing for me, to have this limit). If you don’t want a limit, you can use Google Reader for your main page, which has NO LIMIT.

    Best regards,

  7. I forgot to add that if you see any ORANGE BUTTONS near the top or side of anyone’s blog, that is also a button to click to get the RSS feed.

I no longer have the time to follow blogs that don’t have RSS feeds. A lot of other people don’t either. So if you want readers, be sure you either have the Meta Widget in your sidebar, OR add the orange button (I’m not quite sure how to do that, but personally I think the word RSS looks a lot nicer than the orange button).
