Kuwait Couple and Police

This is a very strange report from the Daily Star. There was a similar report in the Thursday Kuwait Times, which claims there were two couples. Is there a police blotter where newspapers get their information, or do they use inside sources? The stories in each newspaper have different details, and sometimes the details vary significantly.

Culprits Freed, Cop Detained

In a very strange incident, the head investigator at Mubarak Al-Kabeer Police Station has ordered the detention of a first sergeant and released two persons who humiliated the policeman, reports Al-Anba daily.

A police source said the first sergeant arrested a 22 year old man and a 41 year old woman who were inside a car parked in the Abul Hasaniya at 2:00 in the morning, and asked them to hand over their identification documents but they refused to heed the policeman’s request.

The threatened to harm the first sergeant and dismiss him from service, but later handed over their IDs to another policeman who rushed to the area after receiving a call from the first sergeant.

The two persons were released and the policeman was detained but Director of the Security Directorate in Mubarak Al-Kabeer Brigadier Mostafa Khan and his assistant Brigadier Ibrahim Al-Tarrah ordered the immediate release of the first sergeant and referred the case to another investigator.

My comment: I cannot begin to figure out what happened in this story. It could be a hundred different things. The woman could be in the car with her son, escaping from an abusive husband. Or they could be unrelated and naked. There are endless possibilities in between those extremes. We don’t know.

The sergeant could be doing his duty and unjustly punished by superiors using wasta, or he could have exceeded his authority and been let to skate. We don’t know.

Stories like this in the papers mystify me. It all depends on the “police source” and his particular bias.

  1. The car was parked, two people were inside the car, the cop got curious and wanted to “check it out”, and got what he deserved.

Don’t meddle with people’s business, stupid cops and go fight crime and corruption instead… IDIOTS!

  2. A lot of these incidents happen, when the lady or the guy know someone influential enough to put the cop in trouble.

Believe it or not, most of these people actually makeup stories just to get out of the trouble themselves. Many people here are ‘above the law’, and a blind eye is turned towards them.

Pathetic system if you ask me.

  4. Instead of busting lovers these idiot cops should go find themselves some real criminals! I can’t even take a walk on the street without worrying about being mugged, kidnapped, or run over. Were there drugs involved? Weapons? Anything? I bet you there wasn’t. Anonymous Coward said exactly what I wanted to say. Idiot cop gets what he deserves for not minding his own business.

  5. Anonymous & Enigma – I am blown away. I hadn’t considered it from that point of view. You’re saying he is an idiot for enforcing an idiot law?

My first thought was “Get a ROOM!” It’s what we say when a couple is doing something in public that is meant to be private.

I’ll have to think about this.

  6. intlxpatr, do you know what these people do when they bust a girl and a guy in a car? Things like beat the crap out of the guy. Humiliate the girl. Cuss at her, and maybe even force her to do things to them (rape, bj, whatever). Some girls would rather do that than have their families know, not knowing that the cop WON’T take them to the police station in the first place, because that way he’s just asking for trouble.

Believe me, when he went to that couple, he did not want to enforce the law. He just wanted to have fun at their expense. Cops have unofficial orders to leave those people alone and let them off with a warning, but they abuse their authority and the girls fear of being exposed.

So like I said, rather than wasting his time and looking for a laugh or maybe even a quick f*ck, he should be doing his REAL job and finding the guys who are threatening our security.

  7. EniGma – no. I had no idea. That part is never in the newspapers, and I have never heard anyone talking about it. I’ve never seen it mentioned in the blogs. I haven’t heard whispers. There are things we (expats) don’t know if no one tells us.

The story in the paper sounded to me like a lot was left out. I couldn’t figure out what was going on. Thanks for filling me in.

  8. A few years ago, me and my wife were eating shawarma in the car parked at a beach in Fintas. A police car showed up after a while and was “checking out” the cars. they pulled over, walked toward us, and started to ask me who is this with you. I said this is my wife… is there a problem? he said “no, but this is a *suspicious* place”!. and then they left.

The same thing happened to the couple in the news article. There is no law in Kuwait against couples sitting in a car, and cops have no right to meddle in those things. I am glad that the cop got detained, and I hope he rots in his cell, and then also get some up his behind.

  9. Anonymous – So there is no law against a couple sitting in a car? Holy Smokes!

One part makes me laugh – the Fintas Beach?? Even I have heard stories about it being a big MALE on MALE pick-up place! And you were having a picnic there? I’m sorry for laughing!
